    Back in the early 70's when I was in my 20's I had a chance to buy SOHC engine. Hell, I didn't have any money back then, had to pass. Fast forward a couple years I had a chance to buy a Boss 429 Mustang cheap. Dealer I worked at didn't know what they had. Sadly I still didn't have any money. Now I'm old and don't have any money. Some things never change.

    Just out of high school and doing my best to avoid being drafted. Had two friends that bought cammers in the crates from Bill Stroppe in Long Beach. Cost was $2500 each. One went in a 63 1/2 Galaxie fast back to replace a 427 medium riser boat engine previously installed, the other one went in a '59 Custom three hundred tudor. Both were street driven and street raced. I was visiting my home town of San Diego a few years back and passed the house where the '59 used to be. The garage door was open and I could see the taillights sticking out of a mass of boxes. I couldn't stop then and haven't been back since. But if I do, you can bet money on me stopping by to see if that '59 still lives, has the cammer, and is available. Somehow both those guys avoided the draft and I went in the Air Force. I can still remember those 2 cars taking names and kicking butt back then.

    Kiwi Kev posted this legendary Willys on page 3.
    I was in Gordie Rivera's shop in Yuma one day and asked about any local Willys. He told me a story about a guy who had a welding shop in town that had a '33 he raced at the local strip. A Ford team was at the track and broke something. Story goes he welded something for them and wouldn't charge them. Some time later, a truck delivers a crate to the guy's shop. Inside was the thank you note SOHC pictured above. Gordie said the car was a "handful" and that he didn't know what happened to it.
    I visited Jimmie Pankratz' crop dusting hanger the next day and there set this car. Pankratz (RIP) and Don Waldron were completing a beautiful '41 and working on a steel early coupe, but I never forgot this one. Thank you FoMoCo, and Gordie.

    These are Bill COON heads, note the angle and layout of exhaust ports by comparison to the lower standard FE heads with exhaust ports perpendicular to block surface.

    Cammer exhaust port faces are around 30 degrees off horizontal, normal FE exhaust port faces are at 90 degrees to block surface, ie 45 degrees off horizontal. Cammer has them laid over further so clearance normally would be an issue. Love that cammer and those pipes. A LOT of engine for a small lightweight car!:eek:;)
    • An FE cammer is 32" wide and 34" long; a standard FE is 27" wide and 32" long so a cammer is longer and wider, that's an additional 5" in width without exhausts;
    • An FE cammer is 30" in height whilst an FE is 29" tall; and
    • An FE cammer weighs 680lbs compared to a 427FE at 659lbs with aluminum intake, single 4BBL, long tube cast iron headers, complete ignition, starter, alternator, 28 pound flywheel, water pump, fan, belts pulleys and fuel pump.

    In stock chain drive both cams rotate the same direction as the crank..In the gear drive the right cam is turned opposite of crank while the left cam rotates same direction as crank..At least thats how I'm figuring it..

    Wow - those headers are amazing. I'm sure welding them up was a chore. Do the loops of pipes help with scavenging? Or why are they balled up like that? Sorry-probably a noob question.

    My guess would be to keep them equal length as it does make a difference.

  24. 4or5 years ago I used to enjoy watching a guy pull into the Pavilions with his SOHC powered 60 Starliner. A red hardtop, original paint with a mild touch of patina.
    He'd fire it up every hour or so for the crowds delight.
    Put on a good show for us.
