Dear experts, I have a late flathead attached to a 39 trans with a late truck bell housing. I have a new 12 v starter . When I engage the starter the bendix locks up against the flywheel. I am using the flywheel from the truck. Is it the bendix? are their different ring gears? Am I missing some kind of spacer? How should the bendix be lubed? How can you tell if it is bad ? Thanks in advance for any help. Dave

What starter plate are you using? It should have a flat starter pad relative to the plate, not angled.

Is it the new style bendix? I heard there were some clearance problems when using the new style bendix. Its larger than the old style

    Replace the Bendix----Old time remedy

  5. Check the starter shaft for 100% straightness, little bent----big problem.
