So I purchased a new starter today and was hopeing to finaly fire up my project and the starter plate I have does not fit. The bolt pattern is correct
but it fouls on the pan Can I modify it to fit by cutting stuff away or do I have to find a different starter plate.

Hmm I don't think so. You have the car starter plate and sounds like you need the truck one which has the larger opening and also the majority of the plate is recessed. There is one on ebay right now item number is 260463383416
