This rail has been laid up for over thirty years. It runs a highly modified 24 stud with sharp intake and 4 solex carbs. It is complete including the chute. It was built in the UK and left in a surrey barn..............

Id guess a lot of holesawing, hacking, and brazing tubes into it.
Risky job on a flatty race motor, what if you crack it? start again. ugh.

  5. Cant even imagine what that mother would sound like, running the exhaust though the water jackets..............looks the shit.

Looks like the engines that John Bradley built. Just research "Mr. Flathead".

Not an unheard of practice for all out engines. Gives a straighter shot and opens up the ends.

Umm...all flathead exhaust runs through the water jackets. :D

That is a really cool idea for the exhaust -- if you don't need to run water to cool the engine

I remember Ken Cooper saying they used to pack the blocks with fire clay or something like that. If there's no water in it, the exhaust ports are a bit less critical.

We ended up filling the block and running it dry; ran water through the heads between rounds to cool it off. Had one motor that had exhaust routed out the heat riser, but not nearly the diameter of that one. Serious reconstruction needed to make that work.

Great score! It shouldn't be too hard to trace the history over there, should it?

    Good luck,

Used to fill 'em with Block Rock I think it was called. Then bore to the water jacket and sleeve. Don't forget flathead blocks were fairly plentiful back in the day. Like SBC today.

Don't mess around...get it running and race it at the HRD's next year! I'm sure you've got an appropriate tow car...:)

Great looking engine. At first I thought it was one of Hennry's flathead prototypes. If you check out the Flat head history you will find Ford prototypes had the exhaust ports just like the rail engine. they turned 90 degs from the end of the block and met at the center exhaust port. Don't know how they did the water jackets. I thought all Flat Head exhaust ports are surrounded by the water jacket, hence the nick name Detroit Boilers.
