I have a 1950 model flathead. It was rebuilt about 3,000 miles ago. I just bought it. It has been sitting for several years. I need to service it. Is there a specific weight oil or brand I should use?

Put oil or flathead oil in search, a shit load of Threads saying pretty much the same thing out there already.

The search function sucks. Put in "flathead oil" and no results.

Your going to get a million different answers. I use Castrol 20W-50.
Stay away from synthetic as it finds a way to leak real easily.
www.fordbarn.com will have tons of suggestions.

Run a 10w - 30 racing oil. Forget ZDDP additives. Flatheads don't have enough spring pressure to cause a problem.

  12. I use Valvoline 20 / 50 racing oil.

Any decent dino oil with a high enough viscosity to give you decent oil pressure. Really a non issue. zddp wouldn't hurt

    Any quality oil probably work.
As said, stay away from syntetic based oil.
I have allways used mineral based oil, preferable Pensylvanian Kendall or Brad Penn.

I run a SAE 10-40 mineral oil API SL in my 59a. Old engines prefer old spec oil. Modern oils are not so good with flat tappet cams - although valve spring pressures are quite light in flatheads anyway. If she has low pressure when hot or fumes or smokes you can always go to a heavier grade like SAE 20-50. Remember W = winter weight oil which will be runnier in hot climates. Those old engines are not too fussy about oil grades compared to modern multi valve mills so don't stress about it. :)
