I was looking around the shop today for something I could make an adjustable lifter tool out of, for holding the lifter in a Ford flathead, while turning the bolt that adjusts valve lash. If you think ahead you won’t need this because popular opinion is that the only way to do this right is to drill a hole in the lifter bore to hold it with a pin punch or reasonable facsimile. My engine was all assembled before I learned this and personally I shudder at the thought of introducing drill swarf into my freshly assembled engine. Just in case I’m not the only one out there, not thinking, here is my solution. If width adjustment is required the distance can be adjusted with a screw driver or a visegrip. Note that the engine has been rotated slightly to raise the lifter for access. Don't forget to counter rotate it to re-check clearance.
Good thinking. I made one myself out of 3/16" welding rod and it works quite well too. Like you I found out about the need for this tool after the engine was together. Your solution was very clever.
Sounds just like me. I just got an email from Summit, my "Christmas present" is back-ordered till January 17th....
