Got the sump off today (21 stud), took of all the big ends and mains caps but the crank wont come out.

Its loose and 2 people can lift it out 1/4" or so, but it wont come out.

I havent tried that hard, i called it a day and came home, just wanted to check im not missing simething silly as i know nothing about these engines yet.

Crank pulley/flywheel/clutch etc are still attached.

Have you pushed the connecting rods/pistons up a bit? Could be still hooked a bit from the angled rods hooking up still. With pan off, clutch/wheel should be clear, but adding a lot of weight there...

If it is still in the car, just crawl under and peer up at it...when it senses that your head is there, it will release immediately, just like a starter will.

Nope, its still in the car, damm, rod caps, i new there was something i didnt remove:rolleyes:.

Engine is upside down on the workshop floor with the heads and intake removed.

All rods (caps off) are clear.

Ive kept the whole assembly together for now as its a long term rebuild, ill get the journals polished and the whole lot balanced then store it untill im ready to put it all together again.

I guess its just catching up on something, maybe not coming out square and the oil thrower ring is catching or something.

At least i now know theres nothing ive missed, no hidden fixings etc.
Ill wrap a strap round it and yank it out with the engine carne if i have too:D

    Thanks.

If upper part of rods are still basically in place, a couple at bottom of strokes can be partially wrapped in opposing directions arounf crank and so holding a bit with no caps.
    Push them up.
Lifting square will be a lot easier with flywheel off.

yeah, first try to lift it i realised the rods can hold it in, they should be clear now though, i pushed em all down. May have missed one still catching though.

On a different note, can the rods/pistons be removed from the bottom of the bore?

I havent even tried yet (obviously as the crank is still in) so the answer may well be obvious when i try.

  13. My guess is out the bottom because I doubt it will go out the top because of the wear ridge at the top. This is where you write down everything and where is comes from to keep everything in the right place.

Pistons got to go out the top, won't clear from the bottom.

Use a ridge reamer to remove the ridge and then take them out the top.

Yeah i guess, was all in jest though.

Turns out you have to remove the flywheel to get the crank out or the crank pully wont clear the block. I think the bolts behind the flywheel were also in the way.

Took a couple of pistons out, 4 will come out down, other 4 need to go up.
I have a little wear ridge but the pistons came out easy so its obviously not that bad. Bores and rings are perfect.

A little light wear on a couple of journals but im super tempted to just clean it all and put it back together, everything looks pretty good really.

The engine may not even see a car, and if it does it wont do many miles so probably not worht a full on rebuild.

    Thanks for all the help.
