Flathead carnage

  1. Yesterday on a drive in my 33 pickup I noticed brown foam burping from the radiator cap. After removing the cap I could see the cooling system was full of "mud". I figured it was oil, but were would oil come from? I pulled the dip stick and it had nice clean oil on it. We continued driving and I noticed it was running rough- it would occasionally buck or miss, and did not seem to have full power. I figured it had blown a head gasket, so this morning pulled both heads. It looked OK, but upon close inseption I think I can see were it blew and was pushing oil into the water jacket. Hopefully with a mill and new gaskets she'll be back on the road...but don't y'all worry, I got a trick up my sleeve for the lil hauler. And NO Jeffery James, it is not a SBC :D

  2. Looks more like it ate a head gasket than blew one. :D It may just be time for a set of canadian heads milled ever so slightly on that bugger. The put another 60+ years on it.;)
     


  3. I think I'm going with en engine with a couple more studs...that way it'll squeeze the head down better ;)

    carnage is when parts that were inside try to get outside. that's not carnage.

    I came here for carnage and all I got was a blown headgasket.:D

    How many times do you have to have people tell you those old flat motors just aren't that reliable? How about a quad four? Or a Toyota motor?

    Shit, that's not SO bad haha. You should see what Lee (Jalopy Kid) did to his poor flatty on the weekend.

  9. I'd ask if I could have the old one but its too far to drive to pick it up. :D:D

    I would suggest a pair of ardun heads for your extra studded block but they are just basically unobtainium. ;)

    Too bad you don't just happen to have a merc motor with the requisite extra studs. A couple of extra inches never hurt a hauler.

  13. I'm done with small cubic inch junk. I'm thinking a new 5.3 crate will do the job. Think the tranny will hold together??

    Glad Im not the only one fooling myself on these old valve in block motors... I like it...

    HA! That's exactly what I was thinking. Of coarse, I always wish I hadn't looked, when I see a rod trying to be a motor mount.

    But really, for Chris' sake, I'm glad it wasn't horrific.

    Are you sure you want to get rid of that flathead? Its got to be good to make that truck any cooler. I love it with the flathead.

    Interesting. I had a similar problem on a Willys F head,ya know OHV intake and side valve exhaust.After looking closely I saw the blown head gasket (ate up like yours) didn't match the contour of the head properly.The gasket fire ring hung into the chamber a bit and wasn't squeezed between the block and head.

    Your not going to get oil from that hole …. There all water holes on the deck.

    I'm kinda stoked to see the new on in the truck. Now sell your brother the 21 stud for his roadster and put a proper engine in my truck...ahem I mean your truck.

    Your not going to get oil in your water from that head gasket, you would get a boilover as compression gets into your cooling system. Your oil is getting in somewhere else.
