and heard a clunk now his clutch wont work . we pulled the inspection cover and every looks like ok is in working order .clutch peddle feels fine but it wont go into gear with out grinding.. anyone have any ideas before we pull the engine.. I'm thinking he broke a spring on the pressure plate

This is kinda obvious but did the pedal get sloppy?
You might be lucky and just need to adjust it with the threaded clevis.
  3. nope pedal feels exactly the same before . the clutch actually feels perfect .it just grinds when you try to put it in gear .

before you pull the engine pull the top of the tranny off and inspect it. does it shift through the gears with the motor off? does it roll in neutral?? without knowing all the details I'm thinking that either one of the springs in the pressure plate broke or a piece of the clutch came apart and is jammed in between. there are two sides of the clutch plate, so sometimes it can be hard to see through just the inspection window

Grinding...minor, lets car go into gear...or savage, doesn't want to go in at all, ferocious racket??
removing clutch inspection window is easy, and once you've fought the floorboards top of trans is easy. As Skidmarks said, think and try to isolate functions...neatral, in gear, turn engine and wheels by hand in different mode. What car, and is clutch linkage stock for the car or modified?? How low...any impact marks on underside of anything?
  6. with the car it can be started in every gear and works fine .. it rolls in nutral . stock clutch linkage .. it a 30 roadster lowered not too low though impact marks .. everything looks fine in the inspection cover .and grinding and will not go into gear at all while running
