Flathead 12 volt generator conversion question

Ive got an early style flathead generator set up on my flatty. It is the type with the cutout switch on top. Ive had the later style with external regulator converted, but not the early style.

Can it be done?

I cant use the later style because they are about 3/4" longer and it will hit the carb.

Guys on fordbarn have used these. I don't have any experirence with them but I'm thinking about trying one.
