Technical Fish Tail exhaust tips

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by spillaneswillys, Mar 19, 2017.

  1. Anyone know where I can find Fish tails to run out the back of my 51 Dodge truck build. The caveat is the exhaust is 3".

  2. Harley dealers.

1 7/8" will probably be the biggest you will find. you probably can get an exhaust shop to make up a reducer to go from 3" to 1 7/8"

Yup, Harley dealer or classifieds here.

  7. Not for 3" fishtails. But some of the after market custom bike parts dealers may have them in 3"

No offense intended (unless you are prone to being easily offended of course ;) ) but fish tails belong on a custom motorcycle and not on a car.

  9. I am not easily offended but anything you want to put on a hot rod is not offensive. Check out the Chev truck and that's what I am talking about.

They have been on my sedan for 25 years. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone.

  15. I'll bet you lunch that your ride can't make use of 3" exhaust, :p :D

and I'll bet you Lunch for life that if it really does need 3" exhaust then fish tail tips will squish your performance unbearably. :D

    Here's 2-1/2"

I had a old pair on a 32 roadster back a while ago (15 years) or so. I thought they looked really good. I got them from my son who builds early style Harley's. He got them off a old chopper from the late 50s. They were different than the later style.

  17. I bought the Dodge truck with the 3" exhaust all ready installed. I am assuming it will flow all right but the engine is a 72 350 that probably has about 375 hp. If taking the exhaust down to 2" exhaust tips won't hurt I will do it. Let me know what you guys think about that. Really interesting what comes out of a post, that's why we love the HAMB

Well I'm offended!!! How many innocent fish gave their lives just to make that exhaust. Billy Bass is rolling over in his grave over this. :p:p

Its going to depend quite a bit on what all has been done to the engine, but the 3" pipes are likely oversized. Someone who knows better than myself will probably chime in but you would likely see better performance out of 2.25" or 2.5" pipe, again depending on whats been done to the engine.

Imo they are hideous on anything. Especially when they stick out past the bumper, when I see exhaust tips sticking past a bumper more than a few inches tops I want to step on it to teach the owner a lesson. If your really into them many motorcycles ran them my buddy that builds custom bikes probably has 20 sets he would give to you. He takes them off everything that comes into his shop with them on.

See where it says 1-7/8" ????
See where his exhaust is 3" ?

  26. 3" pipe duals needs 600ish horsepower to work right.
    See the bottom line?

  27. Ok I see the table, what will happen if I run this truck with the 3" exhaust?

Doubt it will either help or hurt.
    If you like them,run them.
    Your truck, your taste.
If others don't like them.....so what.

  29. Yeah I am just gonna run em. And with fish tails coming out the sheetmetal. If you try to kick them off you're gonna break your foot.

  30. It Will certainly be a deficit to the package.
You'll never build the power that your engine has the potential to make.
You'll loose velocity of the gas flow and that means loss of torque.
