1947 Studebaker M5 -

 

a 1948 ford 4 dr with the 3 on the tree. Car was brand new with some where in the 200 miles clocked on it. Was a hell of a thrill.

 

MY grandfather's 48 Chevy one ton flatbed is the first vehicle that I ever drove except his Farmall C tractor.

The first car with a stick was the 51 Ford Victoria that my folks bought that was supposed to be my first car. My stepfather may have got that one as payment for a debt though.

A 1930 Model A Sport Coupe...

 

I think I was 5 or 6 when my dad had me steer his Corvair Van, me sitting in his lap while he worked the peddles. Now-a-days I supposed they'd frown at that sort of thing. I steered it, though it may be debatable if that's "driving".

I actually learned stick on a '65 Chevy van I bought years later from my dad. I learned to drive on the streets of LA, which may or may not be the best place to learn. But I did learn fast that way.

 

1961 Impala, 283, 3speed, still think that was a sweet car.

 

1938 Chevy fourdoor......Dad's fishing car. 3 speed floor shift....up and
down the alley behind the house. Also about that time, Dad bought
an old Railway Express truck, maybe '47 International. It had the "ol
granny" gear. More runs down the alley. Was 13 or 14 at the time.

 

'49 Chrysler. Well it wasn't totally standard I think they called it a semi automatic or something like that.

 

Dads' 66 Mustang convertible, 200 six & 3 on the floor.

 

learned to drive in 1976 in my 1949 Chevrolet. 3 on the tree. I din't learn how to drive an automatic until I was 20 and bought a 69 Gran Prix.

all my drivers have been stick shift, even my latest 1993 GMC Sonoma. I was working with a guy last summer, he was driving his van, and I was going to drive his S-10. I get in and look at the automatic shifter on the column and told him "I can't drive this, I don't know how to drive an automatic".

 

1958 Ford high school driving training car. The had both stick and automatics back then. I don't remember if you had a choice.

not the first , but the first "three on the tree" was my first car, my '63 galaxie.The first time I went to start it my brother had the jumper cables...nearly ran him over when it lurched forward!!
I thought i was buying an automatic! damn thing had three pedals!

 

Mine was a 68 SS 396 hardtop. Learned to drive it from the lot to the dmv.

 

Learned on a 76 ford pickup it had a straight 6 and a 3 on the tree. I was 7 or 8 and I hit a tree before I got out of the yard. Didn't slow me down to much though, Cramed it in reverse started over and down the highway I went

 

My old man's 1955 International dump truck. I used to take it up and down PLate River drive when I was fourteen. Hell if you learn to drive in a contraption like that you can drive anything.

 

after reading this thread again.. and noticing all the three on the tree's. my first three on the tree would be my step dads ( i consider him my dad ) 1960 Biscayne. and would be last year before we put a 4 speed in it and dropped the 6 and put in a 8 last winter, he retired this summer.. so my guess we will finish that car up this winter for him to have some fun in during his golden years.

Yes to both. Although it is a Focus now. It even has manual windows.

First time I drove a stick shift was in 1964. My brothers 55 Chev with a pretty potent small block Chevy. He told me to rev it to some RPM, I forget exactly. Let the clutch fly, don't let up on the throttle and shift when he told me. Burning rubber and fish tailing through all 4 gears. I thought it was pretty cool.

When I learned to drive ALL cars had manual trans. First automatic, not counting Fluid Drive, I drove was a 49 Olds. Schools with Drivers Ed were not allowed to use cars with automatics.

 

56 chevy tow truck, three speed(early teens), on the road.... a early 90's f250 in the middle of a snow storm.... tell you what.... you learn quick when you find yourself in precarious situations.

first car I owned was a 56 Plymouth Savoy three speed overdrive.....but technically I probably learned on Dad's 48 Ford F1 four speed.
I can still hear the gear whine in first gear
