Is there a way to tell if what I bought is a reprint or original? I assume it is a reprint but you never know. 1606751912414.jpeg

does it look, feel, and smell like it's 30 years old, or 70 years old?

    Hello,
Sometimes, publishers make reprints, but I believe on the inside publishers copyright page, there should be a date published or reprint information. A lot of reprints of out of publication magazines have the information.

It might look like 1948/1983 or such date as reprinted. But, to get the information from the actual publishing company folks with more knowledge than all of us... check this out:

January 1948 - The First Issue Of HOT ROD

We reserve this space in every issue to help you spot the best deals on used parts at the junkyard or swap meet, but for this special issue, we thought we'd veer away from tech stuff for a moment to show you how to i.d. a real first issue of HOT ROD. The Jan. '48 edition is a collector's item, worth $500 to $1,500, depending on condition. We frequently get email from people excitedly reporting that they've found an original at a garage sale or swap meet, but too often, what they've really found is one of several reprints that were made in the '80s and '90s. Here's what to look for.

    • This is an original January 1948 issue. These can almost always be identified by the expected patina of 65-year-old paper.
    • The trim size of an original issue is 13 x 10 inches, larger than a typical magazine of today. There were a limited number of reproductions made at this size.
    • If the back cover is missing, don't worry. You'll know you still have the entire issue if the last page is marked as page 22. Yup, that's all there was to an original issue.
    • This is a reproduction issue from 1987.
    • Note that the area behind the bar with Vol. 1, No. 1 is red on the reproduction version and white on the original.
    • Page 22 is stamped with a copyright date of 1987 and 1998.
    • The trim size of the repop issue is 11 x 9 inches. We believe there may have been some larger reprints, but not at the full size as in 1948.
