There seems to be some controversy about what car this is.
    Give us your opinion.

  2. I guess it depends on what form of motor sport you are referring to,,I believe Don Garlits was the first man to accomplish the 200 MPH but this was in the quarter mile. HRP

I'm thinking the very first with an automotive engine.

You may be right about Garlits.

If you define hot rod in the traditional sense, as a car based on an early Ford body and frame, then Tony Waters was the first person to go 200mph in a '32 Ford Roadster in 1958.

    RIP Tony Waters.

  5. Ray Keech in the White Triplex (aircraft engines) - 207.55 mph in 1928

  6. Auto-powered it would be the Kenz & Leslie 777 liner (dual engine) or the Xydias (single engine) SoCal Streamliner.

  7. If I'm not totally off base I think the Ford GT 40 was the first American car to see 200 MPH in 1966. HRP

I thought there MIGHT be some controversy there, but didn't want to mention it not being sure of my facts.

Take off one of Garlits' shoes and a little stone named Karamesines will roll out. Kalitta was a day late and a dollar short.

    Datona Beach Road Course

(although it was a 1000 hp Sunbeam)

  15. I believe Bill Elliott was the first NASCAR driver to qualify over 200 (Talladega 1987).

The drag race fans are still divided three ways, Swamp rat, the "greek" or Kalitta .The cam wars days, jeez , it was neat!

  19. I was at Island Dragway the day "BIG" set the first official NHRA record. 201 and change as timed by certified clocks, which the others who claim "first 200" can't.

  20. Benny Parsons was the first to record a 200+ mph qualifying time in NASCAR at Talladega in '82 driving a Pontiac...200.176 mph

Ya mean Ivo wasn"t in the mix?

  22. Buddy Baker went over 200 mph in a Dodge Daytona Charger test mule in 1969. Most of the Chrysler Daytona's, Plymouth Superbird's, Ford Torino Talladega's and Mercury Cyclone Spoilers were all capable of over 200 mph on the big tracks.

Wasn't the Gene Adams/Enriquez car running a naturally aspirated 305ci desoto the first car to run over 200 mph in the quarter "naturally aspirated"?

There seems to be some controversy as to what an "American hot rod" is as well.

So, are you asking about the first car to achieve 200 mph in the quarter mile? Or the first car built in America to reach 200 mph? Or the first HOT ROD to reach 200 mph.

If its the latter, then I already answered your question. Just sayin'.

Good question, the car I was talking about was a FED and not a hotrod.

  26. Correct and Buddy Baker went 200 12 years earlier in practice.

In 1952 the S.C.T.A. claimed this was a hot rod.

In 1952 that WAS a hot rod. In 2013 it still IS a hot rod. It just may not fit into what is defined here as a traditional hot rod.

Flip this could go all over the place, if including land speed record car, there were cars going 200mph way way way early.

Depends on whether you mean race car or road car and even then what kind of race car and a stock road car or a modified (hot rodded) road car.
