Firewall should be a minimum of at least 18, no lighter since it helps strengthen and deaden sound as act as a barrier agianst engine heat, noise, fire(should things get exciting).
Me, I'm into the math thing, I'll layout pie cuts and heat marks, whup out my plasma and rosebud and go to town,
then I finish up with a little teasing with a 5 lb. drilling hammer, some tnder loving care with the deadblow,
and finally the romantic stuff with the dollies and a english wheel or planishing hammer.....whichever the mood calls for!

I used 16 gauge on my '30' coupe. More difficult to bend, but very sturdy and easy to weld.

I used 18 gauge for my firewall. I had 16 gauge but opted for the 18 gauge for ease of cutting/bending.
