    FYI.
I just got off the phone with my State Farm agent whom I’ve had for 40 yrs. She also has my car, business and home coverage.
We decided to cancel the coverage totally on three vehicles over the winter. They sit in a heated garage during a 5 month period.
She asked if I want fire and theft on them and I told her since I have building/home insurance I won’t need them.
    She said I was incorrect.
And stated, if those three vehicles are in running condition with a title and registration the home insurance won’t cover them.
I never knew that. But there may have been some changes made since they got spanked in Florida and now in southern Cal and Hawaii.

This has been normal for many years. You need fire and theft on the vehicle specifically, it's not covered by your home policy.

Up here in Canada even bicycles aren't covered on your home policy unless you specifically have them included.

I learned that lesson when I had a garage fire. I was told that they would cover parts under my home owners but not complete cars.
When I asked for a definition of a part I was informed that that anything not bolted to a car was a part.
The next day I had a lot of toasted parts.

In NC, if you take the liability off they will ask you to turn in your tag.

  6. Same here in South Carolina, if the house or garage burns down, the cars are not insured.

I ask my agent does my insurance on my house and garage cover my project car if the worst happens, simple answer, then the agent told be about a policy that will cover the project cars and the premium was around 65 bucks every six months. HRP

Another way to remove us from the equation. Can't ride on homeowners' insurance; costs too much to maintain seldom-used high-value vehicles; drop coverage, you can't drive them; only a short step from there to them being judged a liability to public safety and being "bought back" to remove them from the roads and rolls.
I know we don't talk politics here, but the pols talk about "the lunatic fringe" and they mean US.

you always had to have insurance on titled property by me for over 40 years already doesn't matter if it was parked inside an insured building. you are also only covered so much for a lawn mower and tools. anything over the amount you better have pictures and extra coverage on the items. same thing if you have a gun collection or if your wife has a plate collection, if it goes over a certain figure you need extra insurance on it besides just your normal house and content insurance.

In CA all you have to do is place your car on Planned Non Operational (PNO). No need to turn in your plates. Doesn't cost much and its good until you request to return to operational status. Easy peasy.

No need to make it political, because it's not. Insurance policies are covering an agreed value for a known entity. If you have things that are outside of the "norm" or high value or high theft items, you need to get those covered separately. Cars are insured separately because they carry different risk.

Many insurance policies here also charge you for removal and disposal of any debris or contents after a fire, too. In some areas, you also have to pay for firefighting costs if you have a fire at your residence. There's a lot people don't realize. That doesn't make it some newfound conspiracy.

...and if you're gonna bitch about how you can't afford your hobby, maybe you should take up a different hobby that costs less.

Don't double insure your buildings either. I had a friend that had his shed on his residence property insured thru 2 different companies. when it burnt down he was bummed out about it but said it was ok because he is going to come out great because it was double insured. a week later he wasn't happy at all, he found out they wouldn't cover his 69 chevelle or his 52-54 chevy because he didn't have separate insurance on them plus each insurance company found out about the other company and each was only going to pay half instead the full agreed amount each. Then he tried to get some money back from them seeing they didn't cover the whole amount but that didn't work either, that was his penalty by trying to take advantage which he didn't know you couldn't do by double insuring. He quickly dropped the second policy on his actual shop on the business property. He thought it was smart being double insured. this happened in the late 90's or maybe early 2000's. he has been gone for about 10 years already himself.

I don't know if they do it anymore but some insurance companies used to have a "storage rate" for good weather only cars that sat in the garage several months of the year but you had to change the policy to have it. Car had to be in a locked garage and obviously not driven to qualify.

I was an insurance agent for over 20yrs., and we never had a customer complain, "Well, I didn't know that.."
Insurance can be very confusing, and sometimes it is on purpose, I feel. Read your policy, and remember, the big print giveth, the small print taketh away. In Colorado you can put a car into "suspense''\ for long periods of non-use, reducing the premium by 90%, and it will still have Comprehensive coverage on it for damage from fire, theft,
vandalism, wind, hail, and rodents/rabbits getting in and eating wires, etc. Be comfortable with your agent and
get to know them. 90% of the new business people we signed up could not tell me the name of their agent.
Right away we knew we had a customer for life.

I had State Farm in past, had vehicles insured as storage only. They have capability to do so.

Hail storm few years ago - every house in subdivision got a new roof except 3 all insured by State Farm. I USED be a State Farm customer.

  26. They have always been that way.

This varies from state to state. In Missouri running or not once you insure a vehicle if you cancel or let it laps they can charge you "high risk" when you go to reinsure. There is nothing your agent can do for you. Here high risk lasts for 7 years.

  29. I have the oppo experience, State Farm has paid out more to me over the years than I WANTED. Part of my roof is 9/12. I built it with metal roofing 17 years ago due to our fire and hail threat and the fact I was not going to crawl up there and re roof it every other year. Last big claim they paid for 10x more than I even wanted to report. Much of it you could not even see

I have everything through State Farm and like you I was amazed that the homeowners wouldn’t cover my cars if they got hurt while sitting in the garages. The girl told me that the comprehensive would cover any damage that occurred to the cars and homeowners covers everything else. Amazing how insurance companies work.
