Hot Rods Fiddy-six Bird

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by MeanGene427, Feb 23, 2019.

  1. Since you have the 427 and toploader, and it was already set up for that combination, it's a no-brainer to build it back that way. Drag race style T-birds are cool to see.

Yeah, they were on there, saw the ads and then found out it was my old buddies that had them, bought both just for the engines. The other one they still have is a 57, stock suspension, no top, also set up for FE, think it had early Mustang buckets stuck in it. Looked at it for a minute, but the fiddy6 was just so...

    He said he's got 9 427's, I bet it's getting a 427. Love that injection setup.

Well, Dove Paquet Improved Exhaust High Risers, Pond CNC MRs, BBMs, valve job by Kuntz and CNC by Jeff Colvert, ported Ebocks- decisions, decisions. I think the 427/428 454ci with the 391 steel crank welded and cut at 3.98, Crower billet rods, and lightened Arias domes, and .760 roller with the Pond heads for now. Injection, Dove Tunnel Wedge w/ 660's, or the PSE adapter plate with 2x4 tunnel and the 660's. Save the 505 Genesis/ Scat for the Falcon. Hmmm...

Nice Algons. You will probably not use the Cherry-Burrell pump. I've converted both mine to Hilborn pumps and Endele nozzles but kept the barrel valve. Both mine have a 2 step valve that transitions great.
Yep with all the FE's use one...

Always likes the lil Birds ever since my Dad almost bought on when I was a kid in 8th grade. (They were CHEAP back then...61)
About your....I'd lose the flairs too and I have a question......How hard would it be to narrow that rear end and pack some really big "fatties" under it?
Would look really trick in my book!
    jus say'in!

If you look at the pic you will see a Hilborn pump hiding in there. I have found and original ALGON control valve, and also a cherry set of original adjustable nozzles. This is my serious set

I have a 40 spline Mark Williams 4-link setup with a spool and 4.86s and 14" wide rims and wheelie bars sitting 6 feet from the Bird- haven't had time to measure yet lol...

I looked back and saw the pump...Mine came with non-adjustables with screens on the bottom. One unit was bought from Al the other with an engine/car I purchased.

It's fun to be a FoRD fan in a sea of Chebbie people. There was a guy who ran that 454 combo in a Late Model in the Mid Ohio valley close to 40 years ago, with "454 C.I. FORD" proudly lettered on the hood. Back to lurking.

There were lots of 447/454s built using those old heavy TRW stroker pistons and LeMans rods, and they still pounded the ground pretty good. Made a good combo with the Holman & Moody L1P1 cam. Modern rods, pistons and cams can make it even stronger, but the stroker kits make it obsolete- but if you already have the parts.. Probably leave the flares for now, just too easy to put it back together- and at least it's all one color lol

My best motivation, other than the car is just cool, was the time spent watching Wayne Torkleson's Bird in the old days at Sacramento, running against Bunker and Riolo's 55 Chebbies. My same old buddies who I just bought this one from used to supply Cammer and then B9 parts to Wayne back then. If you saw the 'ol Yellar Bird run you "get it"

Found some goodies at Pleasanton last Saturday, a pair of 18.50x31 Hoosiers in great shape, and a 48" wide 9 inch, N case and aluminum pinion carrier, full ladder bar setup with coilover mounts, 35 spline Strange axles and Strange disc brakes, 4.30s and Detroit Locker- hmmm...

429-460 would be the cheapest bang for your buck. There everywhere and parts are plentiful.

Second choice for me anyway would be a stroked 390 as someone else mentioned. Those early birds

really are meant for an FE.

Oh yeah! I'm so glad a H.A.M.B.er picked this one up. Can't wait to see what you do with it! Some straight-axle T-bird inspiration from late last year: https://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=39723

My Buddy had a 57 Bird 427 low rise , T10 , 4.10 cogs . He drove it daily, raced it on the weekends , drove it all week again and again .He bought his 427 over the counter at the
Ford dealer , same price as 352 2v . By the way his was a 348 Chebbie when he bought it . I’m all about the Ford in a Ford ! Make old Henry proud and keep the great work .
