Wasn't expecting too much out of this thread, but I'm really enjoying everyone's input.

"Duel" was (I think!) a short story in Playboy magazine before it became a movie. No one mentioned it so far, but Dennis Weaver played the salesman in the movie. (You know, Chester, Matt Dillon's deputy in the old "Gunsmoke" TV series).

Yeah, Robert Mitchum in Thunder Road was pretty badass!:D

One of my all time favorite movie scenes is in "Thunder Road" when Mitchum flicks a cigarette out the window of his car. It hits the guy in the other car right in the face, causing him to crash and burn.

He shot the gap at Cumberland, and screamed by Maynordsville
With T-men on his taillights, roadblocks up ahead
The mountain boy took roads that even Angels feared to tred.

Blazing right through Knoxville, out on Kingston Pike,
Then right outside of Bearden, they made the fatal strike.
He left the road at 90; that’s all there is to say.
The devil got the moonshine and the mountain boy that day.

don't know if anyone has mentioned it, or if anyone even considers it a hot rod movie....but I'd say Mad Max. That is, up until it became about Thunderdome and the cars took a complete back seat.

Anyway, this isn't technically a "car movie," but how about Clint in Gran Torino?

The original "Gone in 60 Seconds" was a masterpiece. The second "60 Seconds" never should have been made.

dirty Mary/crazy Larry? There's some great movies from the early 70's, but it's been all downhill since then. IMO. As far as cars and tough guys go.

W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings (very first movie I saw, don't remember it, but remember the car. I was 5)

  27. My vote goes to Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. It's not an old car movie, but does have the Gran Torino and an early 70' Ford pickup. He is on bad mother fucker in that movie ....A must see

You can definitely argue that for anything other than Road Warrior.
