How much power is needed to push a 2800 pound street car into the 11's with street tires, 450 hp ?

    It's all in the details.

  3. You're right Fred! Posted mine on a thread many years ago and I can't find it for the life of me! But I found it interesting how many 10 second tuners I beat with my 12 second Roadster!

My Last Roadster was fun enough at 11.70 @ 123...

With the Stock Olds engine it ran a 12.07 @110

Dark Blue one pulled off a 10.96 @123 when they hit the track with VHT!

I was asked to leave until I caged both of the cars at a couple of tracks.

Oh well... I knew I'd get kicked off the track when those numbers came up!

Drag racing is cool, but as far as fast goes I just want to be able to keep up with modern sport sedans on curvy roads.

I love the horsepower wars that seem to have made a comeback at the automakers, unfortunately it tends to thin the knowledge base in the younger generation. When you can buy an off the shelf 12 second car you don't "learn" how to build a 12 second car and have no real idea what it actually takes to go that fast or how much it costs.

Just as bad are the guys who think they have a fast car because they timed the telephone posts or routinely walk on their "buddies" 12 second street car on the street (no...really...just ask them) If and when they do go to the track most find out their hot rodded Honda or 6 cylinder Mustang GT is only good for a 15 second pass. Many never come back simply because of this. (too bad really)

I say this with a grin because the off-topic forums have forgotten that 12 seconds is fast for a new guy. With todays turbo/blower/nitrous combined with EFI technology these folks firmly believe if you're not running 8's or 9's you shouldn't bother to show up and in some cases they won't even allow to post or take you seriously unless you post up proof you can run 9's

My Scout has been a work in progress for 5 years and I have affectionally called it the financial avalanche. We'll be running 9's this year but it was a long(ish) and expensive (nothing "ish" about it) road to get there. Sure is fun though

No b-s story but in about 1961, my brother-in-law had a 54 Ford 4dr. He bought a 390 Ford engine that was run in the Daytona 500 the previous year by the Burdick crew. Google Burdicks at Daytona for info. He never ran at a strip, but I seldom remember him losing on the street. Biggest sleeper I was ever around, its an old granny car with 4 doors and stock dog dish hubcaps.

I graduated in 1962 and a street car on street tires that went high 12s was bad ass. Today if it dont go 10s its a turd. Turbos have totally changed street cars, easy drivability with you name it HP on command

  14. That means alot coming from you... considering your Roachy Rod running 13 flat and your 55 is running 12's plus the Bomb Factory Roadster in the tens!

Some of my other hero's on the HAMB had their cars at the drags... DW's coupe was in the tens... Flamed Abones Cdan tickling the low 11's and Littlemans Model A truck when it was streetable almost hit the tens! Crap "Shakey Puddin" pounding out 9's carrying the front wheels past the 60 footers! (It could be streetable!!!!:D)

The OP has a ton of threads for reference material!

  15. For old cars and old technology I enjoyed taking my t-bucket to the grudge night races. It was a tire spinner running low 8's but really just enjoyed running the car. Never thought I would line up against a 390 cougar (those were bad ass) power to weight beat the guy big. The main thing was it was fun as hell and seemed way faster in that open car.

Other times lined up against big block chevells, 5.0 mustangs, imports, Z-06 vettes and actually won more than lost even running low 8's. I would think in a open car that is low to the ground 12's would be pretty fast. My Henry J with old techno parts runs deep into the 11's but just blows the tires off on the streets, so it's fun too. I had an O/T turbo injected Buick that ran pretty damn good too, but it was a different animal with modern parts.

one wheel tire fryer back then..lol

  19. I'm serious! That takes some stones to run that fast in a roadster with no cage!

The '55 ran 11's though... best was an 11.60 spinning the tires for the first 60 feet. Not bad for a small block four speed!

This tired old beater was the first car to ever DRIVE to the HAMB Drags and run in the 10's. 10.98 @ 124.5. She runs about 4 tenths faster at my local track in good weather, but that 10.98 was all she could squeeze out on a 107 degree day.

PS. Sam, I thought I might find you hanging around this thread... I loved those '55 videos.

  21. flamedabone, I got to say you are my hero with that sedan. Driven half way across the the U.S. of A. and runs 10's in that kind of heat and humidity, then drives it back home. With alternative power to boot, not your norm chevy or ford sitting in that engine bay either.

What is 'stock show floor shit'?

It is amazing how many people bandy around the '10 second' expression at the drop of a hat.

Whatever the fast guys/pros are running, just about any streetable car that can run regular tens at the track is pretty impressive in my book.

  24. If it will beat the guy in the stock Corvette next to you, it's fast!

Excuse me? Name ONE "stock show floor shit" that runs in the 10's. Just ONE. There's a couple factory Vettes and a Saleen, but they would be considered exotics.

Statements like that make all internet claims suspect. "Show me the slips or go home." Quiets most people down. FEELING fast and BEING fast are two totally different things. Some of the cars in this thread have been seen or witnessed doing what they claim. The rest? Show me the money.

47 Ford running low nines? YGBSM. A friend had a 392 Hemi powered Henry J drag car that ran 9.99.
It should do a little better now with a 572 in it.

It's interesting to me when hot rod and muscle car guys consider a sports car slow because of its quarter mile times. You're comparing apples to oranges. I would imagine that my OT POS beater would destroy a top fuel drag car on a road course.

Been mid 11's spinning in mine that gets driven regularly....been 11.77@112 at the HAMB Drags and driven as my cruiser all weekend down in Joplin including our late night run to Waffle House after a night of partying, much to the dismay of Joplin P.D. when I parked next to them with open headers and slicks on it.....but then again thats everyday here!
