I have a 1961 Thunderbird with glass packs it started making a snapping or popping noise mainly after I turn the car off but it will also while I am driving I guessing I will have to change mufflers unless anyone has any other thoughts Thanks..
Are the mufflers or exhaust stainless. If so that is commen when using stainless exhaust. If so having the pipes or mufflers coated will help.
swazzie..I didn't notice it before..lstwsh..they are stainless..X426X.thermal expansion is what i was thinking but was hoping to hear that once they were broken in a little it would quiet down..had glass packs on another car with no problems but they weren't stainless they were coated or painted...
If its just the ticking from expansion, it wont go away. I have had uncoated glasspacks in my rivi for 3 years now. They tick everytime it sits warm until cool. no biggie really. Edit: Mine are stainless as well by the way
Some of that noise is normal but if it's excessive your exhaust may be getting too hot. Retarded timing will cause the exhaust to get over-hot so an ignition timing check might be a good idea.
yeah, DrJ might be right, I reread you post, and if you can hear it while the engine is running, then You might have an exhaust temp issue there
Retarded is less than what is spec'ed/needed. Check and see if it is on correct mark or not. Adding 2-4 degrees advanced over stock is usually a good thing.
My sedan has glasspacks and aluminized pipes and it pops and tings for probably a good five to ten minutes when it shuts off. It is the only car I have had that has ever done that.
