Any one on here ever use the Excelsior Comp H tires on a hot rod? They have a really good look, are Dot approved and speed rated to 130 mph. They are a bias nylon tire. I'm looking at 450/18's on 3 inch rims for the front and 700/18's on 5 inch rims for the rear of my 32 lakester. Just curious how they might drive and if anyone has ran them on the street. Also as a second option anyone tried 550R18's Excelsior radials on a 3 inch 32 rim? Thanks
I've run the 16" bias ply Excelsiors on my avatar. Switched over to the Excelsior radials and prefer them over the bias ply Excelsiors
I installed some 550 x 18 and 700 x 18 Excelsior Stahl Radials on '32 wheels this spring for my sedan. They took a bit of weight to balance on the bigger ones (not sure if it's the tire or wheel), but they ride very nice. I only have about 600 miles on them so far.
They aren't terrible looking by any means, but I still like the looks of the Firestones way more. I'm thinking the Excelsior tires are being used because of their function rather than their looks as they sure aren't less expensive.
I'm going for a personal record for my lakester, getting it done and driving on the street by the end of next year. I guarantee I'll never see 130 in any old car I own. No dry lakes or salt here in Nebraska. Any way, it sure as hell ain't no race car. Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology for what I'm building??????
I had bias ply Firestones on it for ten years. They were (are) nice and round. But not really soft and liked to follow a groove now and then. The Excelsiors act like radials. Simple as that. I wanted to change up the car and put some 18" '32 wires on it, and figured I'd try some radials too. Call me soft.....
Had a groove of pavement nearly pulled Me under a semi in the next lane ! Running wide white walls radials now my tub. Drives like I installed all new front end ! You guys do what you want ! I now have a new " pleat "in my bottom cushion !
