Call the places for a rate quote. You will need to either build an engine cradle, able to be loaded by a forklift, or band it down to a pallet so a forklift can move it. (and so it doesnt shift and fall during transit.) It will need to be clean, or bagged, with no oils in the motor that could spill out. You will need the dimensions of the palleted engine, and the weight.

If you live near someones freight dock, you can drop it off, or request lift gate service to your house. They will ship either prepayed, or some, will do freight collect where the person getting the engine pays for shipping when it arrives.

Look in the yellow pages for 'freight forwarding'.
And yes, you will need to put it in a box if you expect some level of protection. If it is just strapped to a pallet then nobody will have a clue how the damage occured.....
Strap it to a pallet then wrap it with a couple sheets of ½ plywood.
