    Hi,
May have asked this before, but with my C.R.S. disease I'm not sure.
When I bought my model A project, included in the parts box was a Dolphin gauges electric speedometer. In the tailshaft of the C4 there is just a plug where the speedo cable would be attached. I have no way of knowing if this trans had a cable or was set up for an electric sender. Dolphin sells an electric sending unit for about $40.00. Is there something in the trans that would trigger the electric sender? Or do I have to install the old cable attachment and then connect the electric sender to that?
    Thanks ahead of time!

It's hard to see just what that is, if you could get a closer picture?

anyways, C4 transmissions generally dont' have anything electrical in them (except a neutral/backup light switch on the shift lever), so you probably need to get Dolphin's sender. I have no idea what it takes to make that sender work....gear? cable?

It's just a rubber plug to fill up the hole

on Fords, the factory speedo drive is the speedo cable.

  6. wow , that's new to me...i checked nap online and this is what a ford speedo cable looks like

then either you have use a cable to drive the sender (or pulse generator as it's really called ) . or the pulse generator goes directly into the transmission.....i think you need to make a call to dolpin's tech help

My 84 Bronco II had speed (cruise control) in which a speed sensor is needed. The transmission had a typical C4/C5 speedo cable attached. I guess the speed sensor may have been included in the dash circuitry. This may be what you have to do. Put the speedo cable in and run it up to dash, where the speed sensor resides. Sure would think you could just mount a speed sensor on the trans and just wire up.

Don't know about Dolphin gauges (but would assume if it is an electric speedo it would take the same thing as my Stewart Warner), but I've got Stewart Warner Wings, and my electric speedo takes the following............Hall Effect/pulse type sensor pictured.

The first picture shows the standard fitting with gear for a C4 on the right and Hall Effect sensor on the left.

The next picture shows the Hall Effect sensor attached to the C4 speedo drive, the square
shaft attaches to the Hall Effect sensor and it all screws together.

    Hope this helps.

That adapter piece is just a very short 1950s-mid 60s type Ford speedo cable.

You could get a normal length 1950s-mid 60s Ford speedo cable and put the electronic sensor part under the dash. They don't like oil much.

The electric sending unit is just a standard FORD speed sensor and the speedo gear gets pushed on the end and is held on with a clip. There's nothing more to it, you get the speed sensor, put the gear on it with the clip, put it in the hole, clamp it down, and connect the electrical connector.

Since it's programmable it doesnt really matter what gear you you use but you do have to buy one.
