i know i'll stir shit. but i dont know why someone would build a car they can't drive. That goes for ANYONE including Big Daddy.

I can see building a car and maybe not driving it because its a show car, but at least be able to drive it. otherwise its a statue.

besides......its easier to pick up chicks if your rollin'

granted the car is a work of art and the detail is amazing. not knocking that..but looking at it makes me wanna get in a GO.

There is no doubt it's cool looking but I agree, how much would that suck if all you could do was look at it?

he should have put that it was in MAd Fab3 and he would have 50 bids by now :D

Dave is a really cool guy and the car in person is really AMAZING,,,

he wants to build another bubble top car on of his own design,,,

With the fact that no one can agree as to what happened to the original (maybe its with James Deans 550), this would be a cool piece of history. I dig the bubble top customs.

I have to agree about it not being drivable but I wonder if the original was? Many of those show cars never had oil put in them and some didn't even have guts in the engines. Seems like all Big D's ran though.
I also wonder if this clone is made from 1200 pounds of Plaster of Paris?

I remember that Bell Auto supplied lots of parts, blowers, etc, so I think they were built to run.

I guess it's art for the sake of art. What's the Mona Lisa, Scream, and ?????? good for? You can't do anything but look at them either. I think Roth and a bunch of other builders built some cars that couldn't be driven, but some of their designs trickled down to some pretty wild street stuff. Roth also built so stuff that he ran the wheels off of too.

BTW, I don't think Roth would have much to do with "traditional" rods if he were alive. His stuff was cutting edge.

i agree, but paintings are made to be looked at, cars are made to be driven.

like i said, jus tmy opnion. and honestly i dont think the original was running/driving, something about frame etc, etc. i dont know enough to make a comment.

According to Roth's book, the frame of the Mysterion actually cracked from transporting it to all of the shows.Seems that the FE engines (actually 390's,not 406's like advertised) were a bit heavy.Quote "I took it to a lotta car shows & then rented it to car show promoter Bob Larivee & while he was haulin' it around to car shows he noticed the frame starting to crack. He took the engines apart & removed the crankshafts & pistons 'cause he figured that was the problem but the problem was that we had chrome plated the frame without stress relieving it."

I wonder what it needs done so that it can be driveable. Ferriris and lambos are now well north of the 200 grand mark so a 100,000 show car shouldn't be too exensive to drive everynow and then. And people would think something from space landed on the freeway.

I really want to drive that thing. And the roswell rod.

    Willobilly,

hrlc is right. Ed Roth built up the shape of the body, laid the glass down, then knocked out the plaster.
I hear she's doing the same thing but the body is in the shape of a cookie!

I guess the felson book I have left something out. He just says what you can read under the picture. They used plaster to build up the body over a rough frame, then ground filed and sanded smooth, no mention of fiberglass. Makes sense though, I always wondered how they kept a plaster body from falling apart.

Same here... That'd be too cool, even if I did just look at it daily for about... 50 years.

We'd need billboards on I-80 in every direction, make it into a tourist trap complete with a velvet curtain and a plexiglass window into the room.

"See the most amazingly cool thing in this [gawd awful] State! The amazingly stunning Mysterion and its owner who hasn't moved from his reclincer since taking ownership!"

That car doesn't cost money, it MAKES money!

In my opinion, the final design and execution of the Mysterion will remain one of the finest works of art that came out of the early '60's....
I understood that Ed could use a remote control to raise and lower the bubbletop, as well as start the engines for show crowds, from a distance...

Timko has made the point of every kid who built that kit: How cool would it be to drive that to school? Or to pick up your chick, who just happened to look remarkably like one of the Shindig Dancers?

The answer might reside in Ed's schedules...The Revell contracts, the obligations to Bob Larrivee, the demand of the public for new showcars, the energy resulting from the car & hobby mags-all mixed with Ed's desire to Try something/Change It/Fix It, move on to the next concept and don't look back...Ed was tireless in those days....the touring,Revell checks and T-Shirts made it possible for Ed,Newt,Henning and occasionally other talent to give us these gifts.....
Probably our favorite Roth Studios creation.....
