for those of you with SBC (or any V8), what rear axle do you run?

I've put a 307cu-in SBC in my 53 poncho, using the stock rear axle with no problems at all.
A friend of mine ran a V8 pontiac engine in his '50 Poncho for years with no problems.
I think you will find your stock axle will be strong enough.

I run 350/350 with the original axle (1949), I'm not a racer rather a cruiser - I just wonder how much this axle can take [IMG] and what would be a good replacement....

  4. Those 3rd members are the same from '37-56 and take a lot of punishment. I broke one in the folks' 55 0lds [same thing] when I was a stupid 16 year old but it took a full throttle neutral-drop to do it.
Their weakest point is rear axle ball bearings and occasionally a rear wheel bearing seal will leak. Gotta remove the bearing to change the seal....

    shit...

so you're tellin me that i didn't have to buy a 93 roadmaster rear end and suspension set (whole thing, rear frame and all) and weld it into the car, and that i could have spent the 300 on something else, and that i could have had my chassis done by now...

    great. fuck.

I just dropped a 283 and glide in my '50 and had problems with rear uni joints so I put in a '55 chevy rear in a day and now have a better rear ratio. The stock Pontiac rear will hold up pretty good. The Olds has the stronger centre but the Pontiac were the choice axles.

  14. Hey Jim! That pontiac looks amazingly like yours. Just needs the purple velvet interior and a wheel/hubcap change.
