Vinnie Vitar, I had his hydro in my old Willys pickup , it would bang your head against the cab in second gear!

The Henry J belonged to Artega and Hellmuth. Wayne Artega was a Willys guy. image.jpeg

So does this mean that red rims and fat whitewalls really were used by real gassers?

The information with the foto says Circa 1962 with the Grove Brothers 1940 Willys coupe.

Here is the same car in 1967 and by then the look is more like you would expect.

Here are a few more shots of Jim Butler with Rowdy Willy. Notice the modified rear window. I am not a fan of the look but it did eliminate the blind spot. It also looks like the deck lid was moulded in with the body. Notice how the gauges are mounted.

It looks kind of like a cut down Aristocrat Gauge Panel.

@37willysgasser Best guess on this one is Mike Kuhl he was from Missouri and raced a 38 Willys Coupe that had a 364 Buick which might explain the 364 on the side and it also says Mike on the side.

I believe that they are the same car and it definitely is a Hemi. I wish that I knew more about it. There was no description with the pictures but I think that I found both pictures in the same place and they look very similar. Who knows how much time might have passed between the two pictures and what changes might have been made. The trail is going cold on the history of some of these old gassers. The best source might be magazines from the early 60s.

Does this look like the same scoop? It looks bigger and more primitive to me.

Stone Woods and Pittman. Early shots before Doug Cook was their driver it was KS Pittman. Look at the front wheels in the first picture

JR-THOMPSON After winning the first ever Little Eliminator title at the 1958 U.S. Nationals in Oklahoma with a B/G 41 Studebaker, Jr. Thompson raced this record-setting B/G 41 Willys through 1964.

Here are some cool pictures of Jr Thompson's Willys coupe but I don't have any idea when he started running it.

    Hello,
As of 1960, he was still ripping up everyone in the 41 Studebaker sedan in B/Gas. On his webpage created by his daughter, it says he set a national record in C/Gas in 1962 in the Willys. So, by all deductions, he raced the Willys in 61. (Or so it seems) We had our C/Gas Willys accident/fire in 1960 and he was still in the Studebaker.
