I saw this related thread, but didn't want to hijack it: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=198424&highlight=dual+master+cylinder I'd like to get a dual master cylinder conversion for my 1959 Jeep. I want to keep it reasonably close to stock -- basically I mean that I don't want it on the firewall. Does anyone know of a bolt-in that has a chance of working with the stock pedals? The reason for my interest in this is that I've had three brake failures in my life and they have all been in Jeeps with a single-pot master cylinder.
Well...the kit I used for my '54 Buick (under the floor type) was from Master Power Brakes. I was very pleased with it, and despite the current post, I'd recommend them. They may not have a direct application...see what interchanged from back in the day, and that will be a good start. For instance, I learned that the master for my '54 Buick was basically the same as the solid-axle Corvettes. It required some work on my part--had to make the pushrod longer, etc.--but it worked great. Call them and see what they can do. -Brad
i have had single master fail as well, i bet if you go out and buy a master for a 1970 chevy pickup with 4 wheel drum brakes you can make it work, should cost about $35, a few t's and new lines and your set. might need a little work to bolt on and get the rod the correct linght but if you can keep an old jeep on the road i'm sure you can get this job done...lol
Check over at the WillysTech group.... http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/WillysTech/ If I remember correctly there is a cj dual master (early model cj5 I think) that is easily adapted to the pick ups frame mount. Other m/c's could be adapted, just keep in mind the bore sizes in relation to the originals and don't skimp on bracketry/engineering when it comes to anything in the braking or steering systems.
Great tips, guys! Oldtin, I think I'll take it in this direction -- probably with the kit: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/WillysTech/message/148649 http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/BrakesDualMaster.html http://www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com/id2_dual_reservoir_master_cylinder.htm
