I need to get a new drive shaft for my truck, after I changed rear axles. The old one is about a inch short. I am looking for a aluminum one. I plan on going to a salvage yard with a tape measure, but I was wondering if anyone has a list of lengths, or what aluminum ones came in.

Good luck, I hope someone can help. I searched for similar info and didn't really find anything. I eventually did some research on eBay to find what I needed. A lot of the driveshafts listed give w to w and overall lenghts so I kept looking until I found one close, I still had to shorten it though (successfully thanks to info from the hamb).

  4. A valuable list list worth saving, thanks bjr.

  5. Also don't over look 2 piece drive shafts if you need a shorter one. I have used the rear half in several builds without having to shorten them. Just swap the yoke. It does take some searching.
2 piece commonly found in 2wd long bed PU's, some cars.

Depending on the trans especially GM Speedway, Jegs, Summit sell yokes that are longer by the inch. Dirt cars with a lot of rear end movement use a longer yoke. We do and never have had a problem.
25 years ago my son and I put a V-8 with a 350 trans in a 7' bed 54 GMC pickup. It needed a 2 piece shaft. I found one at Pick-A-Part from and International Travel All and it was 1" short . Bought a longer yoke and never had a problem.

bjr, that is a pretty nice list that I will save and start with it.

jimmy six, I didn't know about the longer yolk. I have a ax15 tranny now, with a ford rear axle. I will check with them and go from there. Im trying to get my truck done for the George rays race, but the tranny I ordered wont be here til after then and I don't feel like getting a custom shaft made.

I used a 2008 Ford Police interceptor. 55 1/4 , 3 1/2" dia. 1350 universals, Alcoa aluminum and high speed balanced, although you'll have to re balance anyway. Has the bolt on flange type yoke, I used my old for a C6.

I got one of these from Summit with a conversion joint and a 6" yoke for around 200 bucks. ;)

My coupster has the front half of a '69 Ford Econoline. 8" Ford rear, Powerglide with course output spline. Uses the same 'U; joints front and rear.

NAPA (and probably others) has a chart of mix and match 'U' joints. You need distance across both of the cross' and each cap diameter along with internal or external clips. For my '57 PU I used a '79 Firebird driveshaft to join a 9" Lincoln rear and a TH400. Between the yoke and shaft one had internal clips and the other external. The rear and the shaft had different length cross' and diameter caps.
