At the drive in one night in Farmington, Mo. I was paged over the speaker to the concession stand. Thought it was a family emergency. Turned out it was the girl I was going steady with (or so she thought) and I just happened to be there with another gal. Well of course she wanted to go back to the car with me and I finally convinced her that I was there with a bunch of my drinkin' buddies and she really shouldn't be around all those drunks. Talk about sweatin' bullits!. Of course the gal I was with wanted to know what was going on also when I got back to the car. I told her that one of my drinkin' buddies was looking for me and I told him I had a date that night. Whew........ Dennis D

I asked my wife to marry me in a 50 ford coupe in 1970 at the Ohio Valley Drive in. We were watching Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid . Later in the 70's we went to see American Graffiti in this 50 Merc at the same drive in . Now there is a Mcdonalds and a Tractor Supply . Bill

  3. Let's see......Making out with my girlfriend,in her '70 Buick Skylark. Were in the front seat. Popcorn and sodas on the dash. Underneath a blanket. I stick my hand down her pants...she yells!, yanks her leg and gets her foot caught in the steering wheel,HONKING THE HORN! I freak out, trying to get her leg out,Horn still honking! haha! The sodas and the popcorn fall on us. Now we have some of our friends standing next to the car, laughing. They all start shaking the car....horn still honking! This guy with a flashlight comes over and says," You two need to leave!". Now my girlfriend's pissed, trying to get her bra back on and pants zipped up,while everybody's still standing next to the car!!! haha!
We drove out,me thinking we were heading to some dark spot to pick up where we left off,BUT NOOOOOOOOOOO! She's all mad at me...saying "it's ALL your fault". Needless to say,I got dropped off in front of my house. No more drive-ins for her! hahaha!
We broke up shortly after that...

  4. Another one....
Went to the same drive-in with some friends in a 72 Chevelle. My buddy tried to show off, doing a burnout. He lost control and got stuck in the sand, where the swings were, hahaha! We walked home, while he waited for his dad to come and get him. His dad sold his car and bought him a VW.

I was young when the one here in town was still open but I used to tag along with my older sister. The deal was- to borrow mom's car, she had to take me with her. She and her friends always made me sit in the back floor board for fear that someone would see me and think I was their kid. I always heard that movies were played there but damn if I ever saw any.

lets see, i learned a lot from the drive in times. . how to drink purple passion "grape juice w/PGA mixed in a cooler" , how to throw up booze correctly, how to comform the body to the back seat of a 67 lemans cpe. how to break up with your girlfriend and find another before the night is out, and finnally how to correctly throw a used condom out the window as not to stick to the side of the car for all to see while cruising !
GOD I MISS THE DRIVE IN DAYS!!!!!!!

Most of the Drive-Ins around here had faded away by the time I was a teenager! I have actually been inside the screen of one of them though. My grandpa had to go to the one in Malvern,Arkansas on some business for a credit union, and I went with him. The owner had the door open, and I went inside and looked around. Pretty cool! It's a Moose Lodge now! Last time I was by there it looked like the lower section of the screen was open, and they actually hold some kind of events down there.

My great-uncle has told me several stories about sneaking into the Drive-In at Glenwood,Arkansas. The owner cut a ditch on the backside of the property to stop people from sneaking in. They tried to sneak in,and one of their buddies fell in the ditch and almost killed himself! Not really, but it knocked the wind out of the guy and bruised him up. Part of the screen is still there, but it's in disrepair for the most part.

My uncle also turned me onto the fact that you can fit someone between the grill and the radiator on a '57 Chevy!

The Sky-Vue was the Drive In here. It was located on US 67 north of town. I think it closed in like 1976,and they tore the screen down several years later. I just remember watching movies like Gone in 60 Seconds and Aloha Bobby and Rose sitting in the back of our Pinto or '73 Nova SS.

There are a few left here in Arkansas. The one in Marshall,Arkansas has a cruise in every year, but I haven't made it yet.

Always had lots of fun at the 212 Drive-In Theater in Michigan City, Indiana. They showed "Birth of Triplets" between feature films one night! All the blood and after-birth was not a pretty sight! Workers passed among the cars and gave out pamphlets on VD and birth control. This was back in 1964.

The drive in was next to the local airport. Occasionally an inbound pilot would "buzz" the screen to add a little excitement for the night. Sure miss that place.

  14. We had several drive-ins around Omaha to choose from - the Golden Spike at 114th-Dodge, 76th & West Dodge, Q-Twin at 120th-Q, 84th & Center (now it's where they have the Wednesday night cruise nights at Flashbacks), the Skyview on north 72nd...I can't remember the others. By the time I turned 16 and started driving in 1977 the 84th & Center one was long gone (replaced by the Cinema Center), but the others I listed were still in play. I worked with a kid from Millard who'd fill a large grocery sack with popcorn and bury a 6-pack of beer in it, then we'd pull into the Golden Spike and set up on the hood of my hand-me-down '66 Chrysler to watch a double feature (triple if there was any action in the cars around us).

Another time (had to be summer of 1979) we took my '63 Galaxie 500 "box top" with 3-on-the-tree to the Skyview with a carload of guys and a case of beer. By the time the show was over I was in no shape to drive, and one of the other guys tried to drive through the lot over all the darned terraces and out the gate with the car in first gear until I asked why he didn't upshift. "I thought it was an automatic" was his response.

I won't even go into the fun we had at the Fremont Drive-In except to say that the back row was a great place to break out a pony keg and Pizza Hut gallon jugs full of Sloe Gin Fizz...

I went to the drive in in the early 80's and wore out the back seat of my 72 Chevelle and I only remeber seeing one movie PORKIES!! I sure miss those days and crazy times

  16. In the early 60's as a young kid I remember having Orange Crush in bottles out of the picnic basket/cooler, wearing our pajamas in the back seat of the station wagon.

Later as a teen in the late 70's watching Linda Carter (topless!) in "Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw" was the first I ever heard of a 70 sportsroof Mustang with the Cobra 454 engine!

I remember when I was about 13 the Waukegan Drive In was showing x-rated movies....I remember me and my buds riding our bikes up there and sitting on a VERY crowed hill on the side of the road and watching some of the movie. The x-rated flix did not last long there but it was amazing how many people would line the road and the hillside by it to watch them.....Not to mention a FULL parking lot that actually paid to get in.

You are correct they actually were quarts of Miller & Colt... I corrected that in my post.

What I was confusing the Miller & .45's with were the gallon (yes indeed gallon) bottles of Canadian Ace beer I would buy to keep the beer & bongs going in the 70's. I must admit that Ace was the last resort when all else ran out.

    Great stories folks...brings back memories.

'Bout 1974, I was 16, my girlfriend was 17...we got frisky in the back of my van...had a great time..you get the idea...then fell asleep. Honest to GOD, we woke up about 3:30 am...the place, of course was empty. A real life "Wake up little Susie" situation! Man I just knew her father was gonna kill me...I took her home, shut the motor off and rolled up to her house...she got out ...I hauled ass. Her parents didn't wake up (obviously, 'cause I'm alive to tell the story!) ...from then on, we took an alarm clock. What a great gal! :)

I've done just about everything at a drive -in described here...drinking, sneakin' in, smokin', sex...all of it....and as someone else said: I don't remember a single movie title !

Oh by the way...we married, had 2 kids and lived happily until death did us part. She was a great gal! Miss her alot.

We had several all across town.

The Cowtown burned in the 60's.

We watched from a hill overlooking Jacksboro Highway.

    Sad.

It's a car auction site now (I think).

  24. There was one on Route 110 in Melville on Long Island that also showed porn late at night. I worked at a place that had a great view from the roof and the 3rd shift would sit up there on lawn chairs and watch.

  25. Long Island had a bunch of them. Bay Shore, Patchogue, Copiague, Melville... those were our favorites. We did the people in the trunk thing with my '64 Olds. Some nights it was a whole car load for something like $5. Cool things were Planet of The Apes festivals, Soylent Green, The Shining. Most of these outings involved massive amounts of alcohol.

The best was when I had my '65 Chevy 1-ton panel truck. That had the shag (literally) carpet, speakers that de-attached to put outside. I'd park towards the end of a row, with the rear doors open facing the screen. We brought lawn chairs, spackle buckets full of beer and ice, lots of smokable items too.

If anyone wanted to entertain lady friends in the panel truck, the rule was that the back doors stayed open and nobody would watch, although we always did and gave constructive critisism.

You think after a while they would have started looking in the trunks

  27. Yea it was a John Deer, I don't remember the number but it would run 45 MPH on the highway in high gear.

Me and the girl are still friends believe it or not. We never really dated, we tried but it just seemed wierd. I guess we were having too much fun not dating.

Queenstown drive in was a short walk up to the fence from the PG Kustoms garage. You couldn't get there by car. It was hard to hear all of the dialog from outside the fence unless it was a warm summer night but we did it mostly for the hotrod movies with all the cool cars.

The one on Central avenue turned to porn to try and hold on. They had to put up a huge privacy fence. People were running off the road. It was just inside of the beltway.

They would at the Queenstown D.I.

After you got caught trying to sneak in your friends in the trunk, You were a marked man at the Motor Vue. And we had been caught. They ALWAYS checked my trunk after that.
Myself and my buddies Jack and John were blind drunk , and hatched a plan. I let my buddies out about a block from the entrance and agreed to help them over the back fence after I brought the car in. For some reason my pal Jack had brought his dog "Sparky" along. I helped John and Jack over the fence, but we looked down and there was a frantic Sparky still outside. John went back over the fence to get the dog and hand him up to Jack who was hanging over the top of the fence. Jack got the dog, and in a stupor fell backwards over the fence with the dog in his arms. Jack hit his head and was knocked out for a brief moment and the scared shitless dog ran around the theater grounds yelping his ass off. The four of us were escorted to the gate.

The theater is gone, Sparky is gone, John is mostly gone. Jack, myself and an awesome memory survive

  30. Seattle area had several, Midway, Duwamish, BelKirk, Puget Park and later the Valley 6. But if you were young in the 60's you went to the El Rancho. $1.99 a carload and there always was some B teen sexploitation monster movie playing. After midnight they'd play something like a Russ Meyer "adult" movie. The back row was Lovers' Lane. The speakers raised hell with side glass, scratching the hell out of it, you couldn't open the door next to the speaker stand, 4 speeds bucket seats and consoles were the shits and everybody knew what you were going to do if you opened the door to get in the back seat. Windows were always steamed up. They even supplied little electric heaters at some theaters to try to stretch the season. Assholes always peeled out in the gravel when the show was over. It was one of the great adventures for a 16-18 year old male and a rite of passage.
