I have been researching the safety of drilling model A bolt in steering arms for modern ball joints. It seems to me that grounding off the ball, drilling and tapering the hole would turn a relatively useless part into something useable.

From what I understand these pieces are forged and should have the strength to hold up to this.

    Any thoughts?

You tell us. What has your research consisted of?

I think you want to use tie rod ends, not ball joins btw.

A motivation here is that the A type ends use balls forged to the spindle arms, which eventually wear to ovals. Techniques for rebuilding the ball shape can get complicated and maybe scary, whereas with 1932 up type rod ends you can just discard anything you wear out.

It's relatively easy job and the 7 degree reamers are available.

Sorry, yes tie rod ends not ball joints.

I have found essentially that it will be an easy job since I have a mill and grinders available to me at work. What scares me about doing it is if it is not overly difficult why has it not been discussed and done with any kind of regularity?

because, most effective brake set ups don't work with those spindles
