What I learned from the HAMB this week! Those floor pans and trans tunnel top cap are all cut from a 4x8 sheet of 3/8" thick aluminium.

I got the sheet for free but it has just about wore me slick trying to cut it. First I bought a very expensive "metal" cutting blade for my skil saw. It promised to cut 1000 times longer than its competitor. How ever even after soaping it and the cut path up, it only went about 9 inches.

Next I tried a cut off blade in my grinder. It cut but wore itself down to nothing in less than 24 inches. Finally I settled on the jig saw with a fine tooth blade and cutting oil. It was very slow but at least we were cutting.

Yesterday I searched the HAMB for cutting aluminum. Now I had heard about turning saw blades backwards but that was not the advice I received. They said get a carbide skill saw blade with at least 40 teeth if not more. I found one at Lowes that had 60.

I really did not expect it to work but we shot the cut path with WD-40 and as instructed I started very slowly. The crazy thing cut like butter...I mean it!

All of the final mold over runs are trimmed, including the grill opening. I am going to put an egg crate style grill in it (great article from popular hot rodding on building one and it was copied here on the HAMB as well.

But the grill, to make them doable by shade tree guys like me, are simply meant to mount on the inside up against the opening. I am good with that. So last night we took the grill opening all the way flat (removing the mold over runs plus the flat area that would have been left to mount an original grill INSIDE the opening.

I love the look! No hurry now to build that grill...lol

Last night we also cut the extra slab sides on the front wheel opening. Spending some time this morning cleaning up by hand. Looking at lots of photos of the original cars I think they are very close...close enough for now anyway!

What is the red stuff on the body? You are not using old fashioned lacquer spot putty? The new 2 part type work so much nicer.

I use Dynalight filler. Really good stuff. I normally try very hard to really mix well and get rid of any air before applying it. But right there I got four little bubbles which of course didn't show up until the final sand etc. So yes your are correct...just a small amount of spot puddy before the epoxy primer...

be sure you don't use any old type products on your period correct Cobra :)

(it's a fine line...between doing a good job, and doing it how was done back then)

    Now you're talk'n, 110% better.
Still holding out hope you'll paint the top a different color than the body color.

Well I am going to call it a night. After we got the body and pieces in primer (and just before dark) I turned what was left of my attention to the hardtop. It still did not have the mold over run cut out of the rear windows. So I spent about a half hour shaping them etc.

    20180715_213131.jpeg

I also applied reinforced filler to all the failed hinge holes...lol.

Well you are going to get your wish there DDD! At least for the Meltdown Drags anyway. The epoxy primer is sort of a darker shade of gray...the car looks fairly ominous just sitting on the table. LOL

Dad said a few minutes ago we should do the top in satin black for now...which I just happen to have!

Actually I have been thinking about a black vinyl covering??? We shall see.

So here is little jewel. My Dad is notorious for not smiling in photos. It drives my Mom up the wall and has as long as I can remember. Yesterday while working on the hood my daughter said hey smile and I will take a photo. Dad struck this pose.

After seeing the photo my Mother was furious that he had such an amazing smile. She said I just don't understand it. I said it is easy. That is a photo of him working on a Cobra...normally he is just standing next to you! LMAO. She didn't think that was funny.
