Well boys and girls I am back on the horse again. It has been a rough few weeks with the craziness surrounding the Austin's disappearing act. In order to keep my mind off it we started a wheel stand project, it has a build thread going here on the HAMB as well. But to be honest I don't think that is going to totally fill my "Need For Speed" if you now what I mean.

About a week ago I really started to think about what is next for me, I did some serious soul searching. I had thought about just getting away from Vintage Drag Racing altogether and go back to the Hot Rod Gig. I thought about a Vette (which many of you know has been a passion for a while as well). I even thought about going British Sports Car. All of these genre's hold special places in my car psyche. But nothing really clicked you know. Nothing seemed to stir me with the same passion as the Austin...

Until yesterday. Like a bolt of lightening on a clear day it hit me. I know what I want. I know what it is going to look like, sound like, and perform like. I could see it standing there with pie cutter slicks and front runners both mounted on simple black steel wheels. I know what it is going to feel like from the seat of my pants. I even know its name. As if a total confirmation of the project, I checked with Go Daddy this morning and it was available. About 10 minutes ago I purchased the domain: DragSnake.com

Any Guesses as to what I am building?

Well with a name like Drag Snake I'm guessing either Cobra or something Prudhommeish.

Hmmm; Logical 1st answer would be a Cobra variant, or Shelby mustang variant.
However, this being the HAMB, & where folks do the unexpected, sometimes w/astonishing results, I'm betting that DeucedUp is going for the rare, obsolete, unusual, & 1st COBRA engine: Crosley! :D .

This I gotta see. In a super lightweight mini-coupe, on Nitro n Alky, gas for the street. Might give Brian a run for his money? At least it might leave Brian, https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/rebuilding-after-the-crash.991650/ laughing so hard that he'll have to wipe tears away before he hammers it down the strip... :D . I mean, *seriously*, what else could he *possibly* be thinking of. :D .

Can't you just see it. Instead of big wide road course style rims and tires on all four corners, a big ole set of Pie Crust Slicks and front runners on steel wheels or a vintage style etc. Maybe vintage front runner wheels and black steel out back with the slicks...

There were Cobra coupes. Might look a bit wilder in your build plan.

A guy wanted to sell me a real Cobra back in 1967. After driving it, and feeling my legs getting cooked, and knowing that I would have to drive it in the prairie winter, -40, I said it wasn't worth the $4,000 he was asking. Do you think I could have been wrong?
The worst part is, that wasn't the only one I walked away from.

I can see it! I was trying to remember if I have seen someone build a drag styled Cobra like you're describing, i cant say that i have. At least not any other than the ones that I've seen from back in the day. This is going to be awesome. Are you going to try and source an authentic Cobra body, go with fiberglass, or.....?

IMG_1650.JPG An authentic Cobra body would cost $300,000-$500,000. Not so sure I would cut up a real one anyway. As far as running gear, if you've got real deep pockets............

If that note is for me, thanks no, I am over it. I have enough projects to last me. I don't know if I could bend enough to get into one, and if I did get behind the wheel, I would probably need a sky hook to get me out.

Well folks looks like we are off and running. A lot to do if we want to roll this thing into the Meltdown or HAMB Drags next year. When the "Snake" idea finally bit me last week the first thing I knew was we had to find the right body. Some call them "slab" sides and others call them 289 Cobra Bodies etc. But it was imperative we find one because every vintage drag racing cobra photo I could find was this style. It just wouldn't look the part with huge 427 style flares and rounded grill etc.

The reason I love the HAMB is the body found me. A fellow HAMBer to be named later builds a very high quality example of this exact style of body including a hardtop. After a quick phone call where he totally schooled me on the Cobra, I placed an order for the body. We still have some small decisions to make but I have the deposit headed his way this week and if everything goes well we could have the body here around the 1st of the year!

One of the decisions might be a flip top front?
