  1. Doesn't look like Bob's helmut, His was usually the one with the wedge, arrow shape starting just above the middle of his goggles. Neat pic.

    Speaking of exhaust I remember this car rireing up & it scared the hell out me.

    Noise never bother me & still don't but the way the exhaust was comming out of the front fender the pressure was what scared me. Was waiting for it to come out of the bottom, it didn't.

    Never seen it come out the front fender.

    Looks a lot like the old Yellow River Dragway in GA. That would be I-20 in the background if it is.

    Notice the gold plated valve covers (the Jackie Peebles touch) the front wheels, axle, and radius rods were also gold plated. There was another unique feature to this car as it was built for a 392, so when the 426 was put in the car, the top left frame rail had to be modified with a kick out to clear the oil pump. All the body panels on this car were magnesium. This car was later replaced with a new Don Long chassis that was known as the Texas flag car (The Texas flag car is still raced here in Texas as a Jr. fuel car) The car in this picture has more history as it was a California car before it came to Texas. I have looked for this car for nearly 20 years, with hopes of restoring it to it's California days. The sad part of this story is I had this car in my posession until 1977. BTW. that is Woodall in the seat.

    Actually I believe that is from an old drag strip here in Texas. Cant be sure though.

    I'd heard of this, but never seen a pic of it. I am in your debt sir. And to anybody else who has posted in this awesome awesome thread.

    I notice the number there (27) was what he still used until the end of the AIR facility. He may still have the number, not sure. One of the guys that we travel with picks his lottery numbers based on the racers from his era: 27 (Jeff During) 33 (Jim Read) 34 (Harry White) 35 (Tom Hoover's number from the 95 Nationals) 43 (Dave Hawke)...I forget the other two, one was Kevin Flaherty, the late driver of the Shotgun series of Falcons.

    Kevin's number was 20, Claus Maluszczak's was 21. And that was before Greg F and Claus went into business together.
    During's #27 dates back to the Brooksfield days. Others from that era were Brian Hutchesson #91, Roger Keough #57, Serge DeLuca # 179, Zeke Agars #49 (the John H Ellers dragster), Rex Brown was the original #20. Over in Victoria John English had #1, Dave Gale was #40 and the Bounty Hunter ran under #16 although I am not sure if that was Ian Splatt's # or that of car owner Vic Muirhead.
    When the AHRF (Australian Hot Rod Federation, the predecessor to ANDRA) was first set up the head office was in Adelaide so when national license numbers were introduced we got the first pick. I was #89 and that is why my NHRA nostalgia top fuel license is #890.
    Later numbers that come to mind are Kevin Christerson #44 and Jimmy Walton #82. When Jim purchased Densham's Monza body and ran it as Thunda from Down Unda he simply removed the 7 from Densham's NHRA number (782 to this day)

    Yes it does. I love this thread, its like playing "Keeping up with the Joneses" but for everyones benefit. Someone posts a bunch of cool pictures and everyone else feels compelled to one up the guy by posting a bunch of their own. If it werent for this thread my 16G memory stick would have quite a bit more free space on it.

    Hanes Bros. out of OK. taken at Green Valley probably about 1965? This was Eddie Hills old Top fuel chassis. Two friends of mine drove this car for them, but I think one of the Brothers was driving on this day in the fire pants. Looks like Ken (AKA Legs) behind the car in the white t shirt, who later did most of the driving.

    This thread has made me dig deep into my memory. Thanks to all that have posted pix.
