It was to keep the wind from sucking the fuel out of the carbs at high speed...someone once told me that with scoops a nitro car sucked too much air into the carbs and cause the engine to lean out...Cook & Bedwell and Garlits both ran covers over their carbs with fuel motors.

  3. Don't know where I got this picture and please excuse me if it was posted on here before, but Old Willy (Winged Express) is SOOO crossed up and still on it that I had to post it...

Todd Berube is right on with this reply.
After the blowover at the Granationals, we had the car redone and as it turned out, the very first time the new car was run was in the same lane at Sanair in a spring matchrace.
First run on the car was a 5.82 which was really good for the time.

yes. the driver's name was noel black.

THIS WAS NOT A DRAG CAR!!!!! this pic was taken when noel and bert peterson did a few passes to try to grab sponsorship/s and make some show $$$$

here are some stats and pics in its natural state.

i know i always reply when somebody posts a picture of motion I as a dragster; i always will!

noel lost his life in 1970 while driving motion I at over 400 mph and i think it's only right to remember this car, therefore noel, for what it was and not what it wasn't.

please, if you are going to continue to repost pictures of motion I, in respect for noel, post with it the correct information.

    his name was noel black.

    b&n was in sacto.

rhino was not the car's name. it was a derogatory statement made by some idiot journalist (i can say that because i am an idiot journalist).:(

the "only" name ever given to that car was "motion I"!

This may be the only car in history with two motors, with one in front of the front wheels?

john sprenger and i were recently talking about this; wondering if there were any other front engine cars in the configuration.

john sprenger, bert peterson's (the "b" of b&n) last racing partner, is spearheading an effort to gather as many pictures and film of motion I as can be found. i think it's strange that with all the hype about the car after a maiden run at 352 mph in 1969 that there are so few pictures or film of the car. the cinematographer who was with us in 1970 put his film in a can and it has never been seen.

why didn't i take a camera with me in 1970 when i was a part of the crew?

i guess the salt just felt so much like home that i didn't need pictures to remind me of my living room.

i know there are a lot of lsr guys here.

john or i would like to hear from you if you have any pictures in your private collection of motion I, bert or noel or any of their other bonneville cars (gas and/or modified roadster/s), or the many dragsters they raced collectively or individually.

btw: there is an effort to induct the innovative b&n modified roadster into the dry lakes racers hall of fame, of which bert and noel have already been inducted as a team.

Reversion in the intake causes standoff, which is a cloud of fuel above the carbs seen on a dyno. On a dragster, it all winds up on the driver. NHRA requires a cover over open carbs for that reason, regardless of type of car.

It also plays hell with tuning of course.

I always figured it was just to keep debris out (sticky tires and dirt pits).

    Phil,
I don't think so. I have some huge gaps in my collection from the times when I was busy as ANDRA DD.

You are right, I remember the cloud of fuel coming from carbs at Pomona in '57...but his question was why not scoops as opposed to a cover...would scoops have prevented reversion in the intake from the wind flow?

In a very rare interview, he said that it stopped him from over-driving the car. He went on to say that the ride was so rough that having both hands on the wheel worked against him.
