The legendary Chevado wheelstander at Terminal Island in around 80/81. Obviously this was in the early day for the Nomad as it lacks the lettering and the Cragar S/S wheels as seen in most images.

I believe that Ford owner is Jim Waldo, then a resident of Idaho and later of Richland, Washington. Jim was destined to win about a dozen NHRA national events, two World Championships in Stock Eliminator, and be Stock Eliminator runner-up to his son, Eric, at the U.S. Nationals in 2001.

Did anyone run cleaner cars than Tony Nancy? This is before the blower, I think it is Bakersfield, count the Willys coupes, maybe John Grimas' '34 coupe in the background.

Russ Palmer's '35 coupe, running a Dodge on fuel, sponsored by Blair's Speed Shop. Santa Ana

Jazzy Nelson's old coupe at Minter Field, possibly run at this point by Jack Ewell, Jim Kamboor, and Bill Stecker.

This might be Lee Titus, Pomona.

Tom McMullen's roadster, wearing the metalflake green paint he tried once. Not sure where this is, Riverside? Fremont?

I'm with you, Marty. I thought it might be one of those GM aluminum 215s(?).

In both photos the car in the far lane is the Doss, Clayton and King entry with Wayne "The Peregrine" King in the seat. In the near lane it is Rick "The Iceman" Stewart in the Adams, Rasmussen and Stewart car that starred in the "Seven Second Love Affair" movie. The first photo is from Santa Maria and the second is from the Pond (San Fernando). Both cars are now restored. These photos first showed up here (uncaptioned) on page 3 of this thread so I guess that recycling them after almost 10 years is OK. ;)

The 4th photo ever posted on this thread, from December 2007. The Herrera and Sons Austin is the original candy red steel bodied version so the photo dates from prior to mid 1968 when a gold fiberglass bodied version made its debut. More history here: http://austinworks.com/gas-west.html#John Herrera
The Willys is Gene Ciambella's Chuck Finders built truck and it started life with a small block Chevy before a 420 Chrysler was fitted to move from B/GS to A/GS. Gene later changed his name to Conway and ran the Destroyer Jeep and a series of Corvette funny cars.
Edit: Thanks to Bill Duke we now know that Ciambella sold both this truck and the Austin that followed it to Hicks and Son in 67 and 68 respectively and that is when they were renamed Agitator. The Willys went to Ohio racer Paul Day in 1969 and he continued to run it under the Agitatior name. When he crashed the truck late that year he replaced it with a 33 Willys, again running the Agitator name.

Boy the Herrera flip body car really knocked the socks off this teenager when it first appeared in the magazines. So much so that shortly after I bought an A40 2 door (parts car) from a local guy that had cherry picked from two cars to build a drag car.
Unfortunately the lack of tools, work space and experience led to a resale.

Jim, My 215 has the distributor angled. After a closer look, the oil filter location suggests a small block Ford. If so, I wonder who it could be ?

The logo just behind the door is Bill Carter's so he at least did the paint. Walt Prey was working out of Bill's shop at the time so either he or Bill probably did the lettering/striping.

Manual Gonzales' Californian II with Oldsmobile power and possibly Ed Lenarth (later of Holy Toledo Jeep fame) in the seat. This car later ran as an A/FD with big block Mopar power and a "tail" body rather than the roadster seen here. It was also featured on the cover of an early Hot Rod Magazine yearbook.
