I spent a lot of time at Lions in the 60's while I was stationed at Pendleton and after I got out. I was wondering if anybody remembers a fueler sponsored by Pepe's Pizza Parlor. I was at Lions the night it crashed at the far end and the driver lost his life. Does anybody remember the drivers name?

  2. Malone was an amazing guy, could drive anything, an underappreciated guy.
Dig the Garlits chassis and Ivo in the background!

Malone had seat time in a Novi, IIRC.

Is this a restored car in front of a closed north east dragstrip. It looks like a new picture.

    Hello,
Here is Art Malone at Bakersfield 1960 in Garlits' fed. He seems quite happy...
    Thanks,

Marty, Jack Williams car originally had a front mounted supercharger, right? (Part of the reason for the somewhat unusual body shape?)

Glad you enjoyed the video - it is linked on TwoToGo for the Twins, especially the Greek's Twin, but still lots of history and other memories.

Fraze, Boyd beat me to it. I have always been a big fan of that car, since seeing it in Hot Rod. I was at Fremont when the chute failed and he hit the catch-net, doing some damage to the nose section. I understand that Jack built the entire car, body and all. Maybe Boyd will tell us more, since he is from Canada as well.

  23. Jack built the car in the early 60's. I think 63 was when it had the front mounted blower. The first time I saw the car in 65.I think.it had a top mounted blower. Jack had a custom automotive business. He was the "go to guy" He made several parts for my first Altered. The car was rebuilt after Fremont. Jack pssed away a few years ago.His family still have the car. I wasn't able to find a current picture.

I don't remember Pepes Pizza sponsorship, but it could have been Boyd Penington, who died at lions in '64, at the top end, or Harrell Amyx or Joe "the Jet" Jackson, both of whom died at Lions in fuelers at Lions in '66. If I remember correctly, around one/third of all drag racing fatalities in '67 happened at one drag strip: Lions. Those of us who raced fuel cars there kept that in mind, but we also kept racing there.

Seems that Chuck Finders was involved in a BUNCH of cars, especially Willys.
I worked with a guy up here that grew up in the L.A. area, and I recall him telling me his dad knew Chuck pretty well.
