The TorqueMaster did not have 3 speeds , just one gear like a clutch car but had the convertor instead of a clutch

You would have to push the car faster so the convertor would lock up, and then start to turn the engine over so the driver would check for oil pressure hit the gas petal to prime the injectors and then the on switch then out of gear in a short period of time

There was a lever on the left side of the clutch can and you could heel & toe it to get it in & out of gear, so once the engine started you would kick it out of gear and hit the brakes hard and make the turn around - get lined up and kick it back in gear and pull up to the line ready to go

So it was in gear when you were on the starting line and you hit the throttle and away it went but at lower rpm's till the tires got to smoking hard

I had never seen this explained before.
Still have to wonder if it might not be more successful with modern technology.

    Hi Tom

It was a good idea but with out a hi - stall convertor it was not as fast leaving the line as a clutch car was

By the time it took to get the engine & tires up to rpm, the clutch car was long gone

Vance Hunt's "twin engine" top fuel car. Under AHRA, that would put them in a different class to run for Top Eliminator. Make one run for the class win (reducing the amount of runs required), and they would then run off against the single engine top fuel class winner. That loophole lasted for about one event. Regards, Chase

This was OCIR, Lions had electric starters, and when they fired a fuel engine, the lights would dim as it pulled current...OCIR had this sbc-powered starter, it worked well until the sbc ran out of gas, which it did once when I was there...

It gets a bit exciting when you are holding on to one of the front wheels, and that fire breathing beauty comes to life and there is nitro on the rollers & tires and the rear of the car is moving back and forth and trying to jump out of the rollers too

When the driver primes in the injectors and raw fuel gets on the tires and rollers, it becomes a bit un-nerving right before she fires as it's a ' Slip sliding away ' kinda deal

Boy those were great times at the Beach for the Sat nite top fuel shows
