My Good Friend Al DeSalvo from Elm Wood Park ILL. This was his sons car he passed away at the age of 19 it was purchased new its a real 1964 Max Wedge Lightweight Package

In 1964 the light weight was expanded to include more items of a light weight nature to further reduce front end weight on these cars. Below is the list of items as described in a Chrysler letter to Dodge dealers on October 3, 1963. This original letter is included in Darrell Davis's "Complete Guide to the 1964 Dodge Ramcharger and Hemi Charger Package." These parts are listed in the Chrysler letter as:

    1. Aluminum hood with air scoop
    2. Aluminum front fenders
    3. Aluminum front bumper and bumper supports, decals to be affixed to front bumper warning against use of bumper jack
    4. Aluminum radiator air shield
    5. Aluminum radiator crossbar hood lock vertical support brace
    6. No undercoating
    7. "Spray-on deadener" will be deleted from entire car
    8. Front and rear floor carpets will be without jute backing
    9. Dash liners will be omitted
    10. Cowl side panel silencer pads will be omitted

Al Passed away at the age of 79 still racing this 64 dodge wedge motor with push button trans I remember him taping his thumb with electrical tape not to slip off

He was an Icon and will be missed but not forgotten

I'm a old southern drag racer now living in Alaskan wilderness.
I raced a 1963 corvettte C/SP & C/MSP "Mr Terrific" from 1965 -1967 as well as a 1955 chevy D/G. I'm looking for any pics taken of my cars in Louisiana, east TX or Arkansas. Willing to pay for pics or info. Sold my cars after returning from vietnam in 1969. Never raced again.

    Thanks for a great site.

I too knew Al from many races together at Union Grove and his '64 Dodge was NOT a Max Wege car but a genuine aluminum paneled HEMI Super Stock package car. This was originally the Mr. Norms Grand Spaulding car campaigned by Gary Dyer and has since been restored to its 1964 race season condition.

What the heck is it with these old posts that keep popping up this one was started back in 07. Here's a rare shot of someone other than Bill Lawton driving the Tasca Ford Mustang

I love those old 64 Dodges and Plymouths , and those Max Wedge and Hemi cars are to die for. I think I like em more than CHOCOLATE. My favorite was the "WILD WILD WEST" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WICf2lloj0

I used to watch Dorothy Davis race in the early 60's, she drove a black 62 Dodge convert with a 413, prior to the "Wild Wild West", her husband Harold ran an A/SR and and an A/A, both with "Wedge" Chryslers, quite a competitive family.

I think that this is the Valley Home Service chev-powered car, broken in half after a top-end crash...picture is also in Tom Madigan's "Fuel & Guts," but no caption...looks bad, anyone know any more about it?

Great photo, not sure who the fenderless Willys belongs to, but the Bantam competition coupe is Thayer and Trobee, front-mounted blown Chrysler. Al Thayer was from Pomona, and also ran a 29 Ford drag roadster and a lakes Studebaker (and maybe still has the Carter parachute I loaned him 40 years ago...

  25. Post 34490.....That dragster was cut in half by a clutch/flywheel explosion.

    Hey Jamoke!
Great pic of Al with Spartacus!
Spartacus was indeed an original Hemi car, but Al ran Wedge motors the whole time I knew they were racing it. (Much less $$)
Chris started the restoration back to original, but sold it to the guys that restored it to it's original Mr Norms "as raced" back in '64.
I raced against Chris and Al for many years at Great Lakes Dragaway, they are great people.
I was unfortunately the next in line to run when Al crashed Spartacus at the top end - it wasn't too bad, but the original front end parts were all crunched up. Chris was running a Mopar powered roadster at the time, and went flying down the track not buckled in, no helmet to check on his dad who was fine, just hurt pride that his car was messed up.
RIP to a great guy Al DeSalvo.

    Wally.
