And yet another cool BB/GS class car. The So-Cal circuit 68-72 served as the last bastion where traditional bodied, class legal blown gassers bi-weekly ran heads up shows.

WCD, you're right, these guys did not get as much ink as did Pure Hell, Willie, etc, but they were hard runners and never afraid to run flat out, often close to sideways in the lights

Plus, the fuel altered guys had the best car names, we thought that "Panic" was the best name until Dave Bowman named his fuel altered "Mental Cruelty"

Kroona and Sandberg still exists today in Mpls. I think they only run it at shows hoever. lots of spit and polish just like the old days. It was a cool car in it's day too.

Indeed: Panic Mouse, The Mothers In Law, Between Heaven and Hell, Stone T, Purple Passion, Thunder Bucket, Super Thief to serve as but a few examples. Sort of reminded me of how the drag boat guys would devise cool names for their boats.

  11. Not a fancy name, just "Old Blue", but one of the best ever.

Actually Old Blue would have been a good name.

Used to love watching Mooneyham/Sharp wherever they ran. Another one was that yellow fuel coupe w/red numbers and lettering, Browns Muffler maybe, didn't run as often and I only saw it at Pomona

  14. only picture I have found of it. Would love to see an action shot as well

The car featured Hillborns that will slanted forward ala Bruce Larson's 66 Chevelle. The car was later supercharged in about late 1970. Troxell sold it to a guy in Puerto Rico in late 1971 wherein on its maiden voyage down there the guy crashed it. I beleive the body was all fiberglass but featured near OEM body proprtions.

Polished magnesium wheels have a truly unique look. I admire they guys that put in the effort to keep them that way. They usually pay the same level of attention to the rest of the car too. Nice to hear those guys are still out there. Outstanding picture.

Dean, post the pictures of Maryann with those beautifully polished Halibrands. Still can't figure how Jack and me got them on her, took pictures then returned them without getting caught.

This shot is the ultimate for me. That is the nastiest looking Hot Rod EVER-Long Live Fuel Altereds. I remember my dad's A/Fuel Altered w/ weight bars duct taped to the front axle!!;)

  27. I guess you would adjust the weight according to the traction of the track?

    Yes!

More traction = lock the clutch up sooner, which often means more weight up front to keep from unloading the rear and smoking and/ or shaking the tires. This is a simple answer as engine tune-up is a factor as well.

You can GOOGLE "Dave Bowman" "Mental Cruelty" and it will probably direct you to a few altered web sites. It was a very nice looking car that won a few times at Irwindale. He replaced it in late 71 by racing the ex Gas Ronda Mustang
