What engine did most Anglia racers run--blown SBCs? I remember BBC Anglias later on in the '60s but did anyone run 392s or other engines in /Gas racing?

If you mean in 65-67, most were running either bored/stroked 327's, or the 396's=427. By '68, a lot were installing either 392's or maybe an L-88 427. The Kohler's ran a SOHC in their flip top Thames.

I think there was a pretty small window for blown Anglias in the top classes. NHRA didn't allow blown engines in Anglias until 66 (I think that's right) and in 67/68 the fast guys were changing over to late model Mustangs, Barracudas, and such.

But there were a few "hitters" that ran early Hemi's in Anglias. Marrs/Lukens and Steve Woods (Prefect) come to mind.

  8. I just gave away a 60's magazine which featured the Kohler Bros anglia and I think it was sbc but did have a hemi at one point too. If I hadn't given it away I would have scanned it.

I think the Kohler Brothers were the first to put a BBC in an Anglia, followed shortly by Shores & Hess. Hess was one of the first folks to call a big block a Rat. Was he the first? Who knows. Skippers Critter was A/G before AA/G.

Hope you don't mind but I thought that paint job deserved a little adjustment. :)

Thanks for the answers guys. Not to veer off topic but I saw this built Revell Anglia on eBay in November and had to have it. I grabbed the built Nomad from the same seller. Nicely foiled trim on both cars.

Model building is what was probably the most universal of all things that first introduced us kids to drag racing, especially those kids who lived in areas that didn't have drag strips.
Model building and car magazines were the gateway to a lifelong hobby.
No doubt that's why now that we are older, the kits still give us that same spark that we felt "way back when".
I have over 100 kit boxes from the early-mid 1960's on the ceiling of my garage and I still get that "little kid" feeling when I look at them.
    Good medicine.

Yep Doug, and my first trip to a dragstrip was to see a Revell-sponsored funny car meet at Fremont. I won tickets through the Revell Master Modeler's Club.

    Back to the pics!

So much is written about the more prominent teams as Marcellus & Borsch, Leon Fitzgerald, etc. at the expense of leaving out guys like the above-Bob Hankins. A very competetive car. Note that the orange/tangerine hued Bantam in the background belonged to Dave Bowman, owner of the California Stud Vega panel flopper. Both he and Hankins had beautiful Molly applied paint schemes on their altereds.
