I Just tore into the block of my 460 to find it came stock whith dished pistons. I am trying pupm ou moer hp and torque and wnat to keep the stock heads. so my question is would domed pistons add more horses and if so would i have to get heads with a bigger combution chamber.
Theres some Math invloved in Calculating Compression Ratios. But yes Domed Pistons would raise the compression ratio. Not sure what size the combustion chambers are on the 460 Fords. http://www.rbracing-rsr.com/compstaticcalc.html
Like Max points out, do some calculating first. You may do just fine with flat-top pistons. 455 BB Buicks have a slightly bigger dish and I understand that flat-tops will take a 9.0/1 CR Buick engine to 12.0/1 CR. Stock 455 Buicks have a 4.312 bore fwiw.
Thanks Maxwedgehiminut. Milling seems to bee a good option. Is there Any danger in using domes and milled haeads?
Of course, you need to know the Valve/Piston clearance..this is done by the "Clay Method" usually. Not too familiar with the Big Ford, you might seek the help of a Ford and or engine expert.Removing material from the head could cause alignment issues with the intake manifold as well.Really need to do some reading and homework.
Its going back into My F250 if i cant find anything better im also changing the rear end from a dana 60 to a ford nine inch
Also, 68-'72 heads have a 72-77cc chambers, better ports, and stud mounted rocker arms. Those will bump your compression with the stock pistons. Stock pistons and the smaller chamber heads should make around 9:1 CR
