Projects Dodge This - 1939 Dodge Southeast Gasser Build

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Dog_Patch, Aug 12, 2014.

  1. I think right now there are 5 official SEG cars saying they will go. There are 2 cars local to me that are period correct and can pull the wheels up. Since there is always much trash talk o_O I can't avoid lifting tires with those guys :D even if they are too pussy to drive a manual trans;). Main thing is we don't want to line up with S-10 pickups on N2O - BB says he can make sure we get lined up with the right cars.

Since we all like pictures ...... patience comes to those who wait - or something like that. CP Carrillo finished the stroker pistons :) There's been a lot of fondling going on. The Wiseco mystery piston is on the right .... no comparison in the quality. Even looks like the valve pockets are in the right place on the CP piston. Can't wait to build this new bottom end but this will probably be a winter swap.

  6. What did you do Gabriel ? Bigger fuel lines? Or did you even find more after that ?

Here's the rods - very nice but not as interesting as pistons to me anyway. ;)

No crank yet - didn't have bob weight number until this week so its on the balancer still.

  9. Hahaha Tyler I know you have some bad ass machines - you'll need to ask Mr. Panneton about the secret sauce :p he mumbled something about top ports are better than side ports - but it was over my head. o_O

Pretty sure it's the carbon build-up, but obviously any real piston guy is going to know.

Roundy-round guys use the side ports and the drag guys use the vertical ports. Those Mahle's I've got out of that TRD Phase 14 motor have side gas ports for the top ring among other neat features.

  11. Side gas ports assist in laterally loading lite tension compression rings, just as vertical gas ports do. However, a lateral gas port interrupts the compression rings seal on the intake stroke, because the ring needs to seal against the roof of the groove, and every lateral gas port is like a tiny vacuum leak. Ever suck a pen cap or vacuum cap onto your tongue? What happens when you put a hole in the end of the cap.., it won't stay. The intake stroke is the most important, because that's the one that fills the cylinder, and effects the draw on the carb/carbs if you running them. A vertical gas port does NOT impede suction seal, because it is at the back of the groove, and the ring seals against the first 25-50% of the groove roof, as it is out against the cylinder wall, and not buried all the way into the groove depth. All gas ports can clog, and its the laterals that are more susceptible, because it is a less excited port. If your cleaning a jet with some carb spray and the little red coffee stir stick, do you aim it down orifice of the jet, or at the side? Every lateral ported piston with running time I've seen, has most if not all the ports clogged, from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock on the exh valve side, so the whole "verticals clog sooner" thing is a myth. If you got to buy a current Cup engine, you'd see some vertical gas ports from some of the teams. Since Tony's engine is a drag racer, and the ring is a ways down because his cam has more lift than an Empire State Building escalator, and I want his Hemi to really suck (instead of being a weak suck) We stand up with vertical ports, instead of laying down with the weak sucks. Depending on the combo, I've seen 5-15HP better with vertical ports over lateral, and you won't find any Pro Stock or Competition Eliminator pistons with lateral. Some guys get carried away and have there pistons side gas ported, even when they're using a ring with plenty of lateral tension, that does not need the pressure assistance. These combos run better without the lateral port because of the weaker draw on the intake, and because the lateral pressure load causes more friction/drag on a ring that already had enough, or too much lateral load all by itself.

Nice wheelie bar wheels. Do the wheels seem like they are holding up good?

  18. Yeah those are the McMaster Carr wheels you told me about. These haven't been to the track yet, but they are better than the little plastic ones that were on there before. Plan on a stress test on Saturday :)

Looking forward to seeing you get after it at Paradise! Any update on how many SEG racers will be there?

  20. Yeah Tommy - so far Hoopty Wagon, Southern Flyer, Kate, Ol Dirty Bastard and Quick N Dirty. Tudor is planning to bring the Go-Rilla FED. I think Tyler's rods are still sticking out of the pan on his FED :( Jimmy Huff might know of some others.

I'm still debating on whether to drive down friday night after work and stop in a parking lot somewhere and sleep or if i just want to pull it down with the truck and leave early saturday morning

Awesome! Looks like the weather is going to cooperate so there should be plenty of people "on the hill" Saturday. All I need to do is get there before you guys to scoop up all the deals in the swap meet! Scored a pair of Halibrand spindle mount front runners last time at Paradise--the chrome tube axle and early funny car chassis they were attached to was just a bonus.

Sleeping in a parking lot sucks, but at least that gives you time for road side repairs if your truck or trailer has a problem. I think Tony can relate to getting up super early, hitting the road and having problems on the way to a race that is a few hours away. Only reason I bring that up is that this race doesn't last very long, so if you get bogged down with a problem, you won't have a lot of time to fix it. I think the main part of the racing is from 11am until 2pm or so.

  24. There's a church parking lot right across the road from the track entrance, don't think anyone would mind ya parkin' there 'till morning. Cracker Barrel at exit 312, just south of the track 'bout 5mi. They have RV parkin' 'round back. I'm 'bout 10mi from the track, not super easy for an RV, but I'm on a deadend road, you could park on the road that runs in front of my shop. Make it easy on yourself, whatever works. Any questions, hollar out. Exit 312 has all the eat joints, big Home Depot parking lot, plenty o'parking by the Raceway station at that exit also. Take yer pick.
Dragstrip is exit 317, nothing at that exit.

Only thing that scares me is leaving the car parked on the trailer overnight in a parking lot. I sleep like a deadman and probably wouldnt even hear someone crank it lol. I guess as of now i'm planning to just chain it to the trailer that way at worst when i wake up i still have a shell and an engine! Guess im just worrying too much but i do not trust people very far

I'm sure you can figure out a way to disable it from someone else starting it while your snoozing. Simple things like pulling a fuse would slow down or baffle most thieves.

I'm hoping to make it out to spectate
