Hot Rods Do you wear safety shoes/boots when working in your shop?

  1. I use the one with the metal rings around it.......those are safer.

I have a pair of leather H&H Paratrooper Jump boots that my Army Captain son bought me, (I gave away my original jump boots when I left USMC.
Lovely wife Joey says, "Why don't you weld in your jump boots?" (my spit-shined, perfect, built-up soles/heels jump boots that I can 'rock' back & forth in while standing, you know, swagger stick...)
I let her know I wouldn't weld, cut, grind in my H&H's. She said she'd surprise me...

2 weeks later, here is a pair of Corcoran Jump boots in a box delivered to me: These from L.A. Police Gear, only they zip up on the inside ankles. Whoopey! Hot Snot, Now we're in business! And they look good...
I have to admit I kinda gave 'em a Kiwi Spit shine, just for 'drill'...Worked in 'em twice, they're just too nice to scratch up!
I better watch it, or that tub might turn out "Too Nice to Drive!"

After years of wearing steel toed boots, I've had my fill of sore toes, and blisters from the damn things. Never wore them once I got to my work van, and took them off right away. Now it's been 11 years since I retired, and never wear them.
I like safety equipment, and wear safety glasses, gloves, and all sorts of shields, goggles, etc. But no safety toe boots, and never had even a close call without them at home.

And exactly where do you wear the shoe? ( I would insert smilie here but can't find one that's covering it's eyes!)

  9. I wear the same Timberland Pro boots at home that I wear at work. My work boots stay at work, they get greasier at work than the pair at home do. My 19 year old nephew lives in steel toe boots, I’ve not seen him in tennis shoes in probably 4 years.

I wear my safety leather Reboks or Nikes. Never had a problem with dropping shit on my feet. Now my hands, on the other hand, anybody know of any steel reinforced gloves?
    Please let me know!

Of course I wear my shoes on my feet...BUT, if I've taken my Viagra, I have a place to hang my welding helmet;)

They do issue cut resistant kevlar gloves at the nuclear plant I worked at
last. They dont do anything for crush protection, but are required when using
razor type cutting tools. Surprisingly supple and do help when handling
    sharp items.

  14. I worked with a guy that dropped a big-rig rim on his foot, off the back of his truck tire repair F350. Lucky it was right outside the shop. His foot was trapped in the shoe and we went to the ER. The doctor there was able to cut the shoe off and the steel toe was crimped badly. The shoe place replaced the boots for free. His foot (on top) was bruised but nothing broken.

  15. When I was working, we had a Red Wing shoe truck come to work once a year. We were given $120 credit to spend on safety shoes. Most were ugly, but I got a nice pair of black Hush Puppy penny loafers which were quite comfy. I wore them to weddings too.

My last couple of years, no more truck, but had a Red Wing store close by (went on company time...). By then we were given a $130 voucher and we got a corporate discount on top of that. I have a couple of pairs of boots that are very comfy, the last time I wore them was snow blowing this past winter.

I get new safety shoes every six months or so through work; I have a pair of Thorogood shoes that are very comfortable, wear them whenever I am doing something in the garage or yard, like cutting cordwood. I also always wear prescription safety glasses and earplugs.

Over the last 45 years that I have been working on cars, I have rarely worn protective footwear. With my cat like reflexes, my feet seem to always jump out of the way when danger presents itself. Also I am very careful and safety conscious about everything that I'm doing. All of my actions are performed with deliberate thought as to the consequences. I don't lift things over my feet, or anything else for that matter, that I'm not certain I have a very firm grip on and will not drop.

I vary from Flip Flops, to Converse Chucks to steel toes depending on the job.

I only have one pair of foot wear, steel toed welling style boots. I wear them 100% of the time. If I go out I give them a coat of polish and a shine. The usually last me a year or so!

  22. All I know that IF you do wear underwear.. why are all the striped one patterned horizontal? Better camo in they were vertical...

  23. Many moons ago, maybe after I lunched the 396 in my stock car, I had it on the stand tearing it down. One cylinder head was a fight, normally I put a couple of bolts in loose to avoid mishaps. So I pry it off... and it flies off, straight down.

I'm waiting for the pain to clock in... look down... I'm standing between 2 #10 cans holding hardware and pushrods. Both cans were crushed, my feet were okay. I was likely wearing engineer boots at the time with steel toes, Herman's Santa Rosa. But it would have caught me across the tops of both feet.

The last time I wore steel toed boots was in Aug 63 when I left the foundry. Worked 42+ yrs in machine shop running lathes and drill press's with many pieces weighing 50+ lbs handling 6 a minute. Learned to move my feet/hands quick, it's a lesson/trait I've never lost.

I used to weld without my boots being laced up. Until dropping hot weld slag in your boot and dancing around waiting for to cool off, you learn to lace up.

Chippewa for me... I also have a pair
of work boots for dress up like weddings.
Sturdy boots can save your life, kicking out the windshield to escape a burning vehicle, kicking in door or stomping a potential mugger.

My one experiment with lace up boots ended with me going to an ER to get the chunk of slag out of the top of my foot. Burned right through the tongue. THAT'S WHY I WEAR RED WING PECOS SLIP ONS. Never burned through one and if I get a hot one inside my boot, I can kick it off.
