This one is my most favourite hot rod picture of all time.
I had just finished my model A, and took its maiden voyage on the highway with my daughter.
Every time I look at it, I’m taken back to that moment. The car worked so well, everything was perfect that day.

    Hello,

For those that were not around in the 50s or 60s as teenagers or hot rodders/drag racers, this photo makes me smile at the coolness of what we saw or drove every day, back then. There wasn’t a street, drive-in restaurant or even a drive-in theater that did not have the different styles of the hot cars of the day. For some, it was driving the family car. For others, it was cruising around in their own creations along with their teenage friends. But, the variety of the makes and styles made it all the more fun and exciting.

The times were just about right for teenagers to have the freedom in their form of transportation. There is even the Lion’s Dragstrip (Mr. Childers') white ambulance, but it could have been a 4 door family station wagon (or the ultimate slide out surf transportation) for that first teenage driver’s license test and freedom to go where you wanted to be.

Variety is the spice of life: How many can you name and identify out of 10 cars in the photo (ABOVE), of the hectic scene just outside of the Lion's Dragstrip tower?

1959 Nomad Wagon on the right!
Question, how can we be sure that it is from whet little that is seen?

    Hello,

Your question is interesting and could be answered by watching the first video of the Red C/A Altered 32 Coupe in the pits. That is some teenager watching all of the prepping going on for the next round of eliminations. My brother had taken this particular pit movie at Lion's Dragstrip and I just happened to be in the film, (flapping pit pass and all.) Then, the other 32 Altered Coupe films were edited to make a composite film for You Tube.

It was in 1959 and as far as we were concerned, the Chevy Wagon was a 1959 version. But, have no idea whether it was a Nomad or just a Kingswood or even one of the other fancy names for a 4 door Chevy Station Wagons. My wife's childhood Chevy station wagon was a Parkwood, kind of a pinkish-beige color and held their large family of 5 plus a dog, nicely on family road trips to the Salton Sea vacations, back then.

    Hello,

My wife and I were on our way to the Oakland Roadster Show in the big arena. There were two other photo shoots lined up for our Northern California road trip. We were cruising along in the 1965 El Camino and we saw some choppers in the next lane up ahead. I was driving, so my wife gets out the color film, 35mm Pentax Camera and proceeds to take this photo.

I was worried that they would see the camera and get mad at something. Who was this? Well, the Oakland Chapter of the Hell’s Angels. (back of the vest) So, I stayed back a ways and she focused with the 85mm lens for a color shot.

In the next few minutes, we came up to the exact side of the group and the guy on the left looked over at us with his facial glare (with beard) under his dark sunglasses. My wife returned the glare and smiled. Of all things, the guy looked at our red 65 El Camino front to back and actually gave us the thumbs up.

Either he liked our red El Camino or he was saying to my wife that she was cool. We were ok with both meanings if there was one. And they did not surround our car as we cruised toward the Oakland Arena.

As we neared the arena turn off, they kept going North on the roadway. My wife and I both smiled and thought of life sending us a mixed message for some reason.

The El Camino was running great. We went to the arena for the show, spent some time in San Francisco and headed North along the Highway 1 towards our farthest destination. The Sea Ranch property land/homes on the rugged coast line. We were looking for some property for a possible custom home build.

I have a new one today. We were moving the cars around between the garages and my 10 month old granddaughter was standing in the car, both hands on the wheel and having a good time.

No, she get the good looks from Mom and Grandma.
