Do you find Rod & Custom Magazine Lacking ??

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rice n Beans Garage, Aug 22, 2011.

  1. What would these magazines look like, if they were run
by car guys, without the suits interfering ?

They would look like The Rodders Journal.

I've been reading R&C since the very beginning in '53. It's been through its ups and downs (Pat Ganahl and Jeff Tann, respectively) and is still worth reading, IMO. I like the car and event features better than "how to weld" stuff, but you can't please everybody.

  4. My economy is bad and the car magazine had to stop. I like all of them and a friend now drops his off when he is done reading them. I am sure others are cutting luxuries too. I do not like tattoos but still read the magazine articles about cars. None of the older hoodlums in my neighborhood had tattoos. I do not know how tattoos and hot rods got combined. Some of the real old veterans from WWII had small tattoos and they did not cover 101% of their bodies. According to Dr. Phil, people with low self-esteem get tattoos. Tattoos still give some people a negative response. I hate to see some nineteen year old with body art. They lose their freshness and look old before their time.

Did you just quote Dr. F'n Phil on the HAMB??????
Your Man Card just got revoked.

  6. Struck a nerve did I?

  7. I still read R and C every month but do get sick of all the ads and some of the articles don't spin my wheels but I guess Ads pay the bills and you can't please everyone all the time with the tech and articles.

As a subscriber to R&C, I am paying 83 cents per issue. At that rate, I'm getting my money's worth.

    No, doesn't affect me.
I just don't want the HAMB and building Hot Rods to distract you from missing any more of the Oprah show.

  13. I think the magazine is the best bang for the buck around, my latest 2 year deal was $20.00 for two years and I got a R&C tee shirt. If I only find one article in each issue I can get some good info from I consider it a bargin. As far as the ads go, I like looking through them, every once in a while I find something I may need or can make. I could do without the Viagra ads though. I'll keep my subscription going as long as they offer it.

I've been dissappointed that the "Dream Rod" feature only makes it about 1 in 4 issues. Was one of my favorites. It does seem to be a pretty fast read these days and like others have said, too many ads but that's where the $$ are. But I do like a lot of the articles, but would like to see more feature cars!

R & C used to be THE magazine for me, but in the last few years, it has become too much like a lot of the other supermarket mags - so I don't buy it anymore.

Apparently R&C is concerned what it's own future is as well. The editors article in the latest R&C ponders whether electronic tablet magazines will be as effective as ones in print, and that there are still many that enjoy reading magazines laying in their hands.

I'm on my IPAD reading the HAMB.....which has always been in cyberspace. I read a brand new copy of the HAMB right here every day....phenomenal!

Does R&C magazine find the H.A.M.B. membership lacking? At 83 cents an issue, you have to be a cheap fuck if you don't get your monies worth. If more people subscribed, they could afford to ad more pages and more content. While your'e at it subscribe to Hot Rod magazine too!....Don't be a cheap fuck, support the hobby.

So those who don't buy R&C and Hot Rod don't support the hobby?

Who put you in charge of deciding who does or does not support the hobby?

I received a years subscription to R&C a year ago. I'm not renewing.
For me; it's just not what it used to be. That not a knock!

I often thought they should go back to what they did in the mid 60s.
Cheap paper, tinted black and whites and interviews with guys like Gene Winfield
Dean Jeffries and others. I think that I subscribed for about five years at that time.

Whenever I go to swap meets I usually come home with a bunch of
    R&Cs from that era.

I like the '60's style "low rider" cars.
Keep them coming, once in a while, just no "donks"!

President Obama....he told me to get all the cheap fucks in our hobby to start buying car magazines to stimulate the economy.

Go to any magazine stand and there are 1900 magazines that cater to women, and 139 magazines that cater to men, 17 of which are car magazines.

I picked up about half dozen or so issues of R&C before I subscribed. As a novice to old cars in general, it has been very educational. Tech articles, winners of prestigious awards, and even owner profiles (even if they seem like spoiled rich farts for the most part) keep me coming back to issues long after I have read them for the first time.

R&C is going to keep getting my subscription money for the foreseeable future.

I think that ads are more noticeable when the magazine is HALF AS MANY PAGES AS IT USED TO BE.

I think R&C would be much better if Custom Rodder was brought back and combined with it. Make it close to the same size as Street Rodder and get rid of street rodder premium.
