Hot Rods Do Willy's Wire Wheels need supports?

I'm thinking about buying the wheels below which have a bolt pattern of 5 on 4.5. Do these wheels require a support ring when using them on later drums just like using early ford wires on 40 drums? I'm assuming yes. Does anyone make these? I guess I could carefully weld some metal to those flat spots between the holes.
