"Do what you want" is SOOO . . . overrated

  1. I get the impression people who ask for opinions on this site, simply don't have a clear vision, and hope to clear up some ideas they are considering.
All of us form opinions on other peoples cars, not all of us voice that opinion. Now if someone openly asks for opinions, it becomes fair game.
"Do what you want" is the problem, as they really don't know what they want.
"Assisted Hot Rodding" (for those without a clear vision, lack confidence, or an original idea).

I cringe when someone posts I just acquired a 36 Ford 5 window coupe and now I'm going to chop it. Why does everything have to be chopped? 36 Ford coupes have the best body lines ever. Chopping them destroys the proportions of the car. I've used the 36 Ford coupe as an example but this applies to many other cars and models. Everything doesn't have to be chopped. We've all seen chopped out of proportion POS's out there that are examples of wasted time and money that are absolutely hideous. Its OK to post on the HAMB without having a chopped car.

  7. I have mixed feelings on this subject, First off if a guy is out in the shop having fun trying to push himself to the limits and make some kind of sweet ride, I am going to support him even if it is a ford escort. But I could never take an all original car in great shape, strip it down and make a custom or rod out of it. These kind of cars need to be protected a preserved for future generations to enjoy. I personally prefer a hot rod or custom car. With this in mind I usually look for a car that has already been stripped of its original integrity at some other point in time, something that would take more than it could ever be worth to restore to original condition. These are the cars that are ready for someone to have some fun with, learn some new tricks, make something that will be different than anything else out there. I am not saying go into it blind, ask questions research what you are doing. people have done just about everything that you can imagine to cars. Learn from other peoples mistakes. That is what this site is for. If you have not ever messed something up you probably have not ever done anything at all, or possibly you are not telling the truth. Also a car is metal, it can be rebuilt. you may have to cut something completely out and try again but don't settle for that is good enough.

  8. Anyone who goes to all the goodguys shows-world of wheels shows-swap meets =cruise nights- viva this and viva that shows, and is on this and every other car forum is simply jaded and needs to take a break from the exposure to modified cars.......
THEN, he can truly be purified and become a died in the wool restorer, instead of a closet restorer....
see, being a hotrodder and messin up valuable classics is not as bad as you could end up=right?

Where do you draw the line? If you have made ANY custom changes to your car some one some where is not going to like it, hey as long as its not a rolling death trap i don't care it's not mine I don't have to drive it! Cars are like fine paintings I will look at them in a museum but I wouldn't hang most of them on my wall. Some of you will prob say well if you owned the Mona Lisa would you draw a mustache on it? And I would say I am a crazy rich dude and I will do what ever I want with it!

I'm kinda curious when the self proclaimed experts on here last had "an original idea"?

"Do what you want." Is a nice way of saying, "Don't you have a mind of your own? Who decides what shoes you wear in the morning... your mom? Stop trying to please the internet and please yourself. Have some balls and show some individuality. Lemming."

That's what it means. In a nice way. Kinder and gentler.

  15. And I say if you were Rich Enough to buy the Mona Lisa you would have too much common sense to do something that stupid. Otherwise you couldn't have made that kind of money on the first place. (Unless you were some dumb ass rapper )
But you aren't rich enough (and neither am I) and it ain't for sale anyway!

  16. I always look at those threads as someone looking for some direction. Not that the poster wants to build someone else's idea of what thier car should be. I've asked for opinions here on a few occasions and welcomed the input that was offered. In the end I did build the car I wanted, but with the valuable input of some people who were good enough to give me some ideas. For that I once again say thanks. I do however think that a response that states only "it's your car,do what you want" is not helping much.

It seems to me, that there's too much chopping at this time, it's like so many are going crazy, I have to chop it to be cool. WRONG Guy's were asking me, if I'm chopping my '52 Fleetline, no I'm not. Chopped fleetlines look good, but it's a lot of work with a car that already has a cool roof line.
The '49/'51 Merc's that are chopped right look so cool, but it's very refreshing when you see the rare Merc mild custom.
Early tall T's that are chopped look like the Jolly Green Giant step on them, chopping them takes away all the uniqueness of the tall T.
It may be to each his own or beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the problem is there's so many blind builders out there that are delusional.

I agree with the original sentiment of this thread that less is more.

I also remember going to Pleasanton *before* they had to impose the year cutoff because of the infestation of cookie-cutter tri-fives. Now it seems like the same argument is being made only against a different subset of our beloved hotrod culture.

Personally, I'm trying to hang on to my view that anything custom/old/restored/rebuilt is cool as long as it's on the road. Sure some are less cool than others, but hey, to each his own. Snobbery in any form is annoying.

  24. G'day all, people are basically insecure beings. OFten they feel thay their views of how they want progress with their particular project may be misguided or wrong. They truly want or need the opinions and direction of those that they see as their peers or even their superior ore to continue their project. Many value the thoughts and opinions offered on the board even as sarcastic as some may be.

Of course there are the trolls to that just are looking for attention and to cause conflict. As a rule they are easy to spot.

I know that I have posted recently about my stroke last month. I feel that I owe a lot of my recovery to perusing the hamb and I do thank you guys.

Thanks for listening to my vent,
    Ms

  28. True, there are some that could care less about 'tradition', 'history', &c. See the "ugliest customs of the 1950's" thread - but also note that many of those who cry the loudest about the 'ugliness' of those cars are the very ones that gripe about the 'traditional' or 'period correct' crowd being too closed minded. Irony or hypocrisy?

  29. funny how we complane about "overdone " body/frame mods but not so much about engines, how many flatheads can we stand being used.( just an observation I like flatheads)
