If my research is correct, it looks like the 51 and 55 Ford rear end is the same. I'm looking at passenger cars. So, my question is, can they interchange or are there other differences that would be a problem?

I don't think there are any major differences between 51 and 56 unless the location of the spring pads changed.
Rock Auto does show three different cover gaskets for those years though so there may be some differences.

I do know that '54 center section will bolt in a '51 housing but you have to use the '54 axles, they are finer splined, which is a good thing! I have a '56 rearend, I will have to compare it to one of my '51's.

  4. I believe there was some bearing upgrades also. They'll swap as a complete unit, but you can't randomly mix the internal parts. With the additional power of the new OHV V8s, Ford beefed up the rear axle.

The real difference is 4 years.

The rear from a '55 farilane is probably not a direct bolt in to a '51 Business coupe. But I could be mistaken. LOL
