It wasn't a car actually . . . but a 1972 ALLIS-CHALMERS 200 6-speed tractor on a citrus ranch in Dateland, AZ. I bs'd my uncle who was a foreman on the ranch that I knew how to drive a stick (having only ever just watched other people drive them) . . . so I started it up at the mechanics shed . . . and took off. Within a mile or so I pretty well had it figured out . . . but I admit, I was sweating bullets that somebody would notice my inexperience.

Learned to drive in my Dad's 1948 Packard in the late 50's early 60's. It's the car you see in my avtar to the left. Oh by the way I own that car today,it never left the family. My Dad gave it to me in 2000.

First car I drove was a '53 Ford, six cylinder automatic. Learned to drive a real man's car a couple of years later. It was a '41 Chevy coupe, six cylinder 3 on the tree! Just happen to have a picture of it!

12-13 yrs old, learned to drive in dad's 55 nomad. Now, almost 40 yrs later, my 13 yr old son is starting to move it around. Brought it back into the family in 98'.

  11. Dad took me out in a '50 Ford pickup, drove it around , bucking all the way, went for about a half hour , as he laughed , then finally told me I could start in second , instead of Granny

The car was stuck in our barn due to a spindle failure in 1983 and sat there untouched until 2003.

After joining the Hamb in 2003 I decided to get the car running and back on the road,,,never dreaming it would be a 9 year build.

I will omit the photos of just how rough the car was,,just how it looks now,,

And the smile on her face the first time she drove the wagon in almost 30 years,,,priceless!

And quiet possibly the next owner will be Veda,,our granddaughter :) HRP

I first steered a 1954 Mercury Sun Valley down the driveway at age 8. I was on my dad's lap and it was in 1958! First time on the street was in a 1962 Plymouth Valient. Not really cool!

  14. No..I learned to drive a 41 chevy pickup with a 4 speed...it was only 18-19 years old at the time.
Took my driver's test in Dad's brand new black '64 falcon ranchero with a 260, 4 speed. Loved frying the tires on that thing.

I spent summers with my grandma and used to drive her boyfriend's mid 50's Ford truck (this was the mid 80's). I was 10 of 11. It was on a big ranch and you could go wherever you wanted. It was pretty cool.

  23. Wow as I look thru these posts a few times, it's hard to put the term "old" into the proper perspective. By today's standards a lot of the cars described are "old" now but they weren't so much when we learned to drive 'em.

The truck I learned to drive when I was a kid was actually only about 6 years old & worth very little in '62-'63. Today, I'd sure like to have that 9 year 'old' Ford panel truck that my dad had towed to the scrap yard after he bought his new '65 F250.

For me it was a 1930 Model A Sport Coupe that belonged to my older brother. He later sold it for $100.

I learned to drive on a farm Ford 8N tractor; a few weeks later it was in a chevy truck during haying season. The power brakes and the guys bucking the bales in back didn't get along with my best attempts at being smooooth. Next month it was the Bale Stacker. I was 13 and fell madly in love with Twin Falls Idaho, My Cousin's Sister, and a case of Dynomite that was stashed up in the rafters of the chicken coup...

Fortunately, the family farm is still there and is the best neighborhood around to procure a new Dog! Nitro-Nicky

First thing I drove was a Farmall H when I was 7 (1969) with a New Holland baler. Had to stand up to push in the clutch. First vehicle I drove was a 52 Ford F2 pickup when I was 9 (1971) it was 19 years old then, and also the first truck I ever owned.

I learned to drive in a 55 Nash Metropolitan conv. (3 on the tree) by driving it around our yard. My dad bought the car for me when I was 11. It took me two years of cutting lawns and yard work for neighbors to pay him back. First car I drove on the road was a 55 Pontiac 2 dr hardtop with a V8 and 3 on the tree. Or course that was in 1974 when I was 15 (obviously without Dad's permission). Once I had my license I got to drive most of my Dad's cars with him, 59 Edsel 292, 3 spd 11k original miles, 61 Buick hard top, nailhead 3 spd, 57 New Yorker with a 392 Hemi & push-button auto, 39 Pontiac coupe, and the 53 Catalina that I still have today.
When I was 17 I bought a 67 Firebird 400 4spd from the original owner, and drove that my senior year and to college.

  30. I learnt to drive in a 1902 Oldsmobile Curved Dash - although it wasn't really an old car in 1904. I can tell you it was a big learning curve when steering wheels replaced tillers.
