Since there are more Deuce grilles than there are Deuces, I am curious on what the major opinion might be.

The Deuce grill on my 30 coupe is a dark color so I left it as it was, if it was a light color I would have painted the bottom part behind the insert black. Personal preference but I think it looks better when it's a dark color. IMG_0743 (1).jpg

  5. this was mine done in body color because I did some striping done in new paint 007.jpg

My roadster is red and the whole grill shell is red. I wish I'd blacked out the section in question though. It's on my to do list. What was the question???? :)

    Bingo! What Gomez said!

I paint aluminum radiators black too because they look like total ass through a grill...

The question was - do you paint the bottom section that you can see through the grille, the body color or black. First time I've tried the poll option and didn't quite get it right.

When in doubt, black it out...

  11. Trying to follow your line of thought, if you are referring the the shell itself I prefer it painted the same color as the body, now if you were talking about the insert, I like them to be of contrasting color.

The passenger cars left the factory in a gull gray, the commercial trucks had a different grille shell which was a one piece stamping and painted body color, I chose to paint my truck shell sage green and then taped it out and sprayed it black.

I don't restore Deuces so I generally paint them a different colors. HRP

My sedan grille shell insert is painted the same color as the wheels.

He's talking about the area behind the grill insert on the shell itself. When painted body color you see it, if blacked out you don't...
  13. I would be sure the radiator is black as a well as the part of the shell behind the insert.

  14. Another one where the insert matches the wheels. HRP

    Black insert.

  15. Always matches the car color period!:D IMG_6626.JPG

  16. Yes sir, Bob McGee set the bar for Deuces and he painted the complete radiator shell body color. HRP

Thank you for your responses. This was prompted by a comment I read here from someone who said that that area should be black. Never really thought about it before but since I am currently sanding the grille shell, thought I should ask. It will be the body color like I originally intended.

I agree with Gonzo, el Scotto and happydaze. That panel should be painted satin black and HRP's pick-up is a perfect example why as the painted panel spoils the design of the grill shell/insert which is a major feature on 32's and lots of Model A's. I know Henry did it but we don't follow all of Henry's ideas with our chopped tops, filled and peaked grill shells etc. which are all classed as improvements over the original design.
